Hi! I’m going to visit a nursery tomorrow, can you give me any ideas for questions to ask? First time mum so not a clue!

I asked about: - Meals. What they’ll be getting. - How and where they nap. - Where they’ll play. - How many staff per child. - Fee’s

I also asked about: - Ongoing communication: Many places now have a bit of a private social feed where they can provide updates on your child during the day. I'm also interested in knowing what the feedback process is should they spot any development delays with my little one. - What's the process is grandma/dad want to pick them up - Food: What's the process if my little one has allergies. Particularly, when they sit down to eat with the other children, how do they ensure there's no cross contamination - Outdoors: Is there opportunity to go play outside every day - Logistics: Confirm if we'll provide our own nappies and formulas - Fees: Confirm we can use tax free childcare and 15 free hours towards monthly fee, and how that works.

I’d think about what’s important to you for your LO. - do you want a nursery that takes the children out and about on little trips? If so, do they do this and what are the adult ratios when doing this? - do you want an outside area? Do they have this? - what approach to learning do they take? - how will they communicate with you on a daily basis? Do they have an app to give you updates? I think you’ll also naturally think of things as you go around based on their tour. Definitely ask about funded hours and any daily concessions and what this includes - I pay £10 daily to cover all food/meals, nappies, milk, wipes and sun cream but have to provide my own nappy cream. There are minimum staff ratios dependent on age, so worth asking if they are at the minimum threshold or whether they have a higher staff ratio. My 15 hours are spread across the whole year so it works out at 11ish hours a week, so would be useful to know how they do that because it varies by nursery. Good luck!🫶🏻

Ensure you know about hours. I was suprised there were set hours and I couldn't pick specific ones I wanted and have had to compromise (maybe nieve of me) also how they spread any funding..if it's term time or all year some funding they split over 52 weeks which we found better.

To add to above: About how many staff per child.. it must be 1 adult per 3 children (if under 2 years old) better count yourself, to make sure they keeping ratio all the time. Check if kids attending the setting look clean (noses, after feed clean) as your child will be looked after the same. Also, worth asking if staff change a lot or is there many that been working for years. As big staff rotation could be a sign of not good relationship between staff and management. Which obviously doesn’t benefit the children All these I am saying from own experience working in the nursery years ago.

I came up with these x

Thanks everyone!
