I am a primary teacher and I think the job is actually quite family friendly in terms of working hours. I get to school at 7, teach from 8-2:30, leave at 3 (those are my school hours). I must admit, teaching is not what it used to be, especially with this new generation of kids who aren’t disciplined at home and believe they so privileged. I find myself dealing with a lot of behaviour rather than the teaching itself but my school leadership team (inclusion team, deputy principal, principals, etc) are quite supportive in that sense. There is a lot behind the scenes that goes on within teaching, like the lesson planning, resource creation and the legal/administrative side, but this job is so rewarding and I believe it takes a certain kind of person who is extrinsically motivated to do this job. In terms of studying a teaching degree, I don’t think it’s very family friendly. I only say this because you cannot work as much to provide for you family, and the … PT 2

study commitments are usually pretty intense, especially with going on placements where all your time has to be dedicated to those 1, 2 or 7 weeks of full time unpaid work as a pre-service teacher. Unless, however, you do study part time where you have less of an academic load or study online where you don’t have to attend uni for classes. I can’t speak much about Occupational Therapy but I know it would have maybe about the same study load, if not more as there is a lot of theory behind a health discipline. It is also quite competitive to get in with a high ranking needed, whereas with teaching there are some government grants/incentives to help you along the way. Happy to chat further about this if you wanna pm me 🤗

Thank you

Hey I’m currently studying OT. It’s an amazing course if you’re into it. A lot of the work is online but there are classes every week. The terms are in 6 week blocks at my uni. The only thing would be the placements.

May I know which university?

I’m at SCU

Oh ok is it hard to do with kids

My kids are really super energetic so it’s actually refreshing to have to focus on something else. It’s not so hard as I explained to my kids that mummy goes to school just like them, they’ve visited the campus with me and my daughter loves to do tabletop activities while I study. The uni I go to is more a get in get out vibe where you can meet people and chat etc but I feel it’s more everyone has a full plate and wants to just get their degree which I kinda like. They understand.
