Wanting to work but daycare costs

Y’all, my daughter just turned 6 months and I’ve been wanting to go back to work because I’ve been going crazy but oh my god. Why does it cost so much.

that’s why i’m a sahm 😅

Have you ever considered working from home?

Holy cow 😅😅 Like how can people afford that for one kid, much less multiple. I pay $145 a week for my PreK-er for a great church daycare program. And we have another baby on the way that’ll be $165 a week when she starts, but they’ll only be like a month or 2 of overlap thank goodness And YMCAs are supposed to be super affordable too!

That’s cheaper than I pay, but child care is insane. Have you looked at all types of places. Smaller home based ones might be cheaper. There might be co-op daycares where parents have to help once a week. Also see what things the city offers. These costs are why my mom found a nice elderly neighbor to take care of me when she went to work.

We had luck with finding someone who does daycare out of her home. I found her on a local moms Facebook group. She used to work as a pre k/kindergarten teacher. She’s so much more flexible with times, we also don’t pay if he doesn’t go bc of illness or vacations, or if she is sick or needs time off. It’s not “academic” like a lot of these facilities are, but she only has 6 kids, he gets to socialize with kids of all different ages, and I feel much more comfortable knowing he’s getting a more personalized experience, almost like he’s still at home but with a social aspect. The only down side is it’s just her, so if she gets sick or needs a day off, we have to find alternative care. But it’s a trade off I’m willing to deal with. Maybe see if you can find someone like that if you’re comfortable with it? My sons been with her since he was 6 months old, he’s 18 months now and he loves her. She treats all of the kids like their her own. She charges $45/day

I tried to apply for childcare through my school, hoping I could not only use it to go to class but get a job, it was $2k a month and we don't qualify for any assistance because my husband gets BAH 🫠

@Leah yeah my husbands army too so we don’t qualify for anything. Which sucks because it’s like people think they make amazing money blah blah blah and yeah he makes enough but it’s not like we are rolling in money. We can’t afford daycare or a nanny or babysitter. Every charges astronomical amount or the same amount I would be getting paid for working

But my god I’m climbing the walls. I used to work full time + any other hours if people would call out. I love staying home with my daughter but by god I need some adult time.

@Myranda I'm not sure if it's the same on army bases, but I just found out I can work for the daycare on base & get priority as a spouse to be hired, and then also get 100% discounted daycare. You should look into it!

I would but I don’t live on base

But I’ll def check it out

@Myranda neither do I!
