School logistics

Hi all, I know we’re a year away but just asking for any advice on how you manage logistics of school pick up and drop off? We both work full time earning roughly £40k each mon to Fri him 7.30-4.30 me 9-6 both with 45 mins travel each way. We have no support network locally to help with pick ups and drop offs. Going from nursery 8-6 to school 9-3 (or 8-4 with breakfast club and after school club) seems impossible and incredibly expensive. How do others in similar situations manage it? My OH is a self employed builder so reducing hours not an option and I’m looking at getting a new job in January so don’t know how flexible working options will be. Just intrigued to know what different options there are to manage the juggle and if anyone on a similar salary has reduced hours and made it work financially?

Are you sure your wrap around care is only until 4? My sons was basically 7:30-5:30 4 sounds early for wrap around care But have you looked into a childminder for pick up?

We are in a very simular situation, I don't think there is any way to make it work financially! I'm going to have to cut my hours from 8-5 to 830- 4.45 I work 4 days a week which means I lose about 3hrs but he will have to go into breakfast an after school club!

Have you looked at a childminder? They will happily do wrap around I off it until 6pm to accommodate for the normal 9-5 workers! And all the other minders in my area are cheaper than the breakfast/afterschool club!

As above, double check the wraparound care the school offer. The schools we’re considering all do broadly the same 7ish-6ish, or look at local childminders that do drop offs and pick ups for the school you’re considering. If you’re looking for a new job, perhaps the flexibility might be something that becomes a priority over other aspects of your work? Flexibility with my husbands job and me extending my part time hours is the only way we can juggle it all and not have him doing ridiculously long days.

We are in the same situation, no childcare in our village, but the school a few villages along offers 7.45 to 6pm so we are hoping we get into that one. I currently work shifts, but will be looking for a new job so I can help out with dropoffs and collections as it's mainly my husband at the moment

Remember you can use tax free childcare up to 11yo

Childminder for pick up and drop offs, much cheaper at around £6 an hour, can do breakfast and tea too.
