Talking 🗣️

Hiya My friend recently saw the Health visitor for her daughters nine month check up and they said she is behind on speech because she only says 1 word and at 9 months they should be saying at least 3 😳 My little girl was 8 months on the 2nd of this month and she has only recently started babbling and no signs of any words yet, but obviously I’m encouraging it. She blows a lot of raspberries and has started making funny noises sucking her lips ect and she is very happy and smiley but just in general isn’t very loud. Should I be worried? I very much doubt she will be saying 3 words in under a month. I know all babies do things when they are ready but I can’t help but worry since my friend told me what the health visitor said! Xx

My daughter is 8 months and doesn’t say any words. It’s all just guidelines every baby is different and all develop at different stages, I wouldn’t worry babe! My daughter has 4 teeth, my friends baby has 0 teeth but is crawling and my daughter isn’t crawling yet. It’s down to each baby xxx

I’ve never ever heard of health visitors expecting 3 words by 9 months, I’d ignore her completely, that’s ridiculous!! I wouldn’t be concerned in the slightest

It’s all just a guide, my son started with mama dada and baba around 9 months but at 18 months still doesn’t say anything else! Their understanding can be a lot higher compared to their actual speech

That's ridiculous, I don't expect any recognisable words till they're well past a year, ignore that x

I’m convinced health visitors are not trained in the slightest. The things I hear them say here is hilarious. Ignore and move on. Absolutely nothing in nhs website indicates this is an issue. Either report her or ignore and move on. I don’t have HV for this reason exactly. They are useless

The health visitor is just been power hungry dick in my opinion (most of them think they are doctors) and If that’s the case I can’t wait for my daughters next month as she can’t say a word or sit up unaided and she’s 8 months old 😅

All babies develop differently but I’ve never heard of 3 words by 9 months! My son just started crawling like a week ago (he’s 8 months). On their terms, it would be “late”.

Girl please take it with a pinch of salt . As Emma said , health visitors are quite shocking with what they spew . I have my 2 year appointment and my daughter is sooo slim , no chubbiness in sight but I was told she was overweight 😂😂 Every child moves at a different pace and speaking before 1 is definitely not a point of measurement. PS - your daughter is tooo adorable

This didn’t come up at all when my first son had his 10mo check. Absolute rubbish that they should be saying 3 word at 9mo 🤦🏻‍♀️ Most don’t say their proper first words until closer to a year. Please don’t worry, it’s nonsense. If it’s going by the ages and stages questionnaire that some HV will use, the age bracket is 9-11 months, if you fill that in at 9mo the answers will be very different to filling it in almost 2 months later. The questionnaire has to account for the entire age bracket, but not being able to say words at 9mo is not behind.

That’s ridiculous at 9 months - was this the 9-12 month questionnaire? I think this is more appropriate by 1 year old and even then only things like mama dada

I would ignore her, respectfully. Tbh i don’t know anyone who’s had a review before 1st birthday, it’s too early to be judging that.

Girl, ignore all these doctors they are insane and just want that extra $. All they do is stress out parents. Your baby will talk when she is ready. Enjoy her, block the negativity. P.s- she's so freakin' cute!!!🥰

The things my little one has taken her time with. Like walking. She crawled so early that she enjoyed crawling and she didn’t start walking until after her birthday party where other kids were walking and she was 14 months. She could move around from area to area but not full walk. I don’t recall when she started saying words, but I’m not sure it was at nine months. Our doctor here gives us a range and gauge and doesn’t really overwhelm me with what she should be doing unless she’s in missing like several pivotal things. But when I had big questions, I would also just called the nurse and she would answer any of my questions as well. I would check deeply into yourself to make sure you are not accidentally putting your fears on your little one to help, keep your meter occupied. Sometimes we just need to find something to worry about it. We can definitely use our kids to do this. Focus on loving her and giving her what she needs and you do that very well and all will be OK.

At 2 years, they expect 3 words I know that because today I had health care visit for my two years old so don't worry and ignore that xx

I’ve never ever heard of this expectation at 9 months. My little boy has a speech delay - he only said 25 words by age 2.5

🤣 yup they’re all different. And honestly the change can happen so quick. I was SO worried too, I don’t think my kiddo said anything at 8 months either maybe not even at 9months 😅. Then my kiddo went from not even consistently saying dada to putting two words together in a couple of months, it was nuts. I was so sure he was behind then it’s like a switch flipped and he was ahead stringing words together. They learn and do in their own time. Your daughter has probably been busy learning something else. The beauty of life before school, they can learn what they want in whatever order. Just keep reading and talking to her (narrating your day helps) and one day she’ll surprise you….. you may even look back at this moment and wonder why you worried. I get it mama it’s hard not to worry but 🤞🏻 you see some progress soon to ease your mind.

@Shannon thank you for your lovely reply! Yes this is the first thing I really have worried about and I know she will get there. I just don’t like the thought of HV’s saying things like that. Xx

I wouldn't be concerned at this point my darling, i never had my midwife say anything at this age about my daughter who is now 3 and half. I thought it was more around 12 months they said their first word. My daughter has a slight delay in her speech at 3 and half and no big deal was made my son didnt stop talking from 2 lol. Dont fret honestly noises and babbling is the start of her beginning to verbally communicate. My daughter only 18 months ago had a referal to speech and language but shes talking heaps more in only the last few months. It will come together all children are different, your health visitor is really being ridiculous

@shirin thank you! I thought it sounded far too young!!

I have never heard they expect 3 words at 9 months my LO is extremely vocal but definitely no actual words
