Tax free child care scheme UK

Has anybody used this? How does it work? I know it says for every £8 the government will pay £2 but do you just put money in the account you’ve set up on the website and the government will top it up?

Yes- you transfer money, the gov top it up (only up to £500 every 3 months though) So I transfer 80% of my nursery bill, get the gov top up for the remaining 20% and then pay the nursery from that account.

Thank you! That’s made me understand it a lot better. Do they top it up as soon as you put in the money?? X

No, not immediately. Sometimes it’s taken as little as a few hours, other times a day. So don’t leave it to the last second to pay the bill, just incase!

They do 20% I tend to do it when I get paid and then they top up within 3-5 days and then I pay

I've always had mine pretty quick but yeah. You can also put the full amount of the bill in and save the govt top up as a bit of a savings account. We've got ours as a little bit of wiggle room just in case we have a tight month! I always put it in a couple days before the bill is due. You can also set up regular payments out of it like Direct Debit but ours isn't a set amount every month so we have to go in and pay the specific amount to the nursery. Oh and when you set up the account. It will give you a special code to give the nursery so they know the money coming in is for your child :)
