I need answers from other autism parents

So I have a question : Does anyone any have an autistic child who is still in pull-ups that attends preschool? If so does the school charge an extra fee because they are in pull-ups and not potty trained? My son is 5 years old. I just had to remove my son from school because they were asking for an additional copayment of $50 a week because my son is in pull-ups and not potty trained smh 🤦🏽‍♀️ 😔

I hope you don’t mind me answering as I don’t have an autistic child. I am a teacher in a public school though. Your child is entitled to a free public education, and not being potty trained is not a reason to deny them that. They also couldn’t charge you any sort of fee for that.

@GMF let me rephrase my post. So he is in preschool not public school. My apologies. So it was a problem for the preschool

@Jasmine oh, I understand now. I read it as you were wondering if he switched to a public school if that would still be the case. Unfortunately I think private schools can do whatever they want 😕

My 6 year old is autistic and is in kindergarten and still wearing pullups but he our insurance pays for him to have an aid with him and he has a shortened day cause he can't handle whole day but hopefully after Christmas he will handle 4 hrs a day and his aid will change him if needed

My son is 2 and in pullups! I'm not sure if they will charge but most schools want them potty trained before starting school but I would talk to the school to ask. The kids can't help it if they have disability but they should change for not being potty trained. I would still work on it with him when you can but find a school you can bring him to that won't charge you because that's ridiculous

@Jasmine I'm not in the US so I can't give you an answer, but I wanna give my love and support to you and your little one. I hope I'm not overstepping. ❤️

@Cassie that would be great for my son. A short day of school and getting a aide to be with him

@Lindsey definitely looking for a new school

@Shandra thank you 🥰❤️

@GMF he will be starting kindergarten soon. I was wondering if the same rules applied for public school.

Just talk to your local school district and principal with an IEP they should work with u my boy is in just regular public school and they right off agreed to do short day and since he was already going to a group for speech and they worked with school before they let her just go with him it's been a life saver cause my boy melts down when I drop him off sometimes so a normal teacher wouldn't be able to handle it so aid has ability to take him to special needs room till he calms down and then goes back to class or what ever she needs to I would definitely look into what it would take to get a one on one aid

@Cassie ok thank you. What does a short day consist of? 4 hours? 5 hours?

My boy goes for just 2 hrs a day at school and 2 hrs at a behavioral and autism group center right now but may work toward doing all 4 hrs in school if he keeps doing well but it all depends on what child can handle with an IEP they modify it all around the kid and cause my boy has days that he can't handle much his aid is able to choose if he can handle in classroom with all the other kids or to take him into the special needs room for more one on one
