Nursery flexibility

I was wondering if there are any nursery workers on here or childminders who would be able to advise. I plan on starting a midwifery course September 2025 and I'm having a hard time understanding how it could work with putting my two into childcare. I know that when you do the uni blocks you're at uni for 2 days a week, but once it changes to a placement block I won't know placement shifts until 6 weeks before. Would I have to just put them into nursery full time to guarantee childcare or would nursery be flexible and I could let them know the days I need with some notice?

I’d say you would need full time places, it’s really hard to change days, sometimes waiting months for days to become available.

@Emma I was afraid this would be the case. Someone told me you can normally find flexible nurserys but I feel like it's probably hard to come across!

Especially with the extra demand now with the funded hours

@Emma nightmare 🥲

Is there a nursery attached to the university? Or one close sometimes they are more flexible as they cater to the unis

@Lydia I think I'll have a good dig around and see if there are any like this. I don't believe the university has a nursery attached but I have heard of NHS nurseries so I wonder if they'd take children of students

I’d definitely shop around at different nurseries as there are two nurseries near me (Oxfordshire) that offer flexi days

Have a look at different nurseries as some offer flexi contracts and all you need to do is let them know what days little ones will be attending a month in advance ❤️

@Georgie thank you so much, it's reassuring to know this sort of thing exists!

@Nicole will definitely look out for this! Thank you x

My partner works shifts so we do different days every week and month to month! Just have to let them know at least a month in advance so they can send invoice x
