Nursery place

Has anyone in the UK been refused a nursery place for their child because of their additional needs? I thought they weren’t allowed to discriminate against any child. Am genuinely shocked and feel very sad for my little one

We never got refused, if the nursery doesn’t have the funding they may have felt like they couldn’t provide the care and needs for your child but I’m pretty sure it still comes under discrimination in a way.

If they feel like they can't meet your child's needs, would you want them to go there? I know schools can make the argument that they cannot meet need and this then goes into the decision making process when the LA allocate them a school. I guess a nursery could argue the same. They have to ensure they can safeguard your child, the other children and their staff. I know it's hard but I would want my son to attend somewhere that met his needs.

I had a nursery tell me this about my son due to lack of funding. When I told my health visitor she wasn’t happy and she said ‘they shouldn’t have said that to you’ luckily I found a nursery that welcomed him with open arms and they have been great with my son. They keep me updated on the regular and are working towards getting him his ehcp

It happened to me. My son’s non-verbal and awaiting diagnosis for autism. Because of the communication difficulties 2 nurseries couldn’t take him in. I’m happy they didn’t because in the end I found a nursery with amazing staff members who really help us. I’m not sure if it’s a coincidence but the first 2 nurseries were privately owned. His current nursery is also a sure start centre, quite large and have had many children with special education needs. It’s just about finding the best nursery to suit your child’s needs.

That is so illegal, I’d report that to Ofsted

I was concerned my son wouldn’t get the help he would need in a private nursery using the 15hrs so I looked into a school nursery and I mentioned that my son is showing signs of autism and she said that wasn’t a problem and the school SENCO is amazing and actually works alongside the clinic we will be getting him assessed in at the end of the month. It definitely made me feel more comfortable with getting a place there and he will be doing 3hrs a day over 5 days so more than enough for him and hopefully will get him into a better routine, he starts on Tuesday.

We didnt get refused but we were told not this term and maybe next term..
