Has anyone applied for schools (reception year) without visiting the school. I have contacted schools to arrange visits but have been given any dates yet and I’m really worried that I won’t get a school for my son in time.

Should I just apply anyway?

Are you talking about for next year September’s intake? If so, chill out you’ve got loads of time for visits, some schools haven’t even started the term yet! You’ve got until mid January 2025 to put your application. Also you don’t get to choose what school your child goes to, the council does. You just put down your 3 choices and hope that you get your top pick.

@Neena ok. Thank you. 😊 But do you think I can add more schools later on 😅? X

What are you talking about add later on? You only get one application. On that one application you get 3 choices. If you only put down one choice and send it in, you don’t get to add another 2 later. Whatever 3 choices you put on that application are the 3 schools you have chosen.

The application process opens in November and schools will advertise their tours for you to look around. The deadline like the above comment says is usually around Jan 15th. You then find out what school you have been given in April. Transition for starting school will begin in July 2025.

@Neena I get 6 options on my application. (Barnet council) Okay, I don’t get to add any more later on. Thank you x That’s what I wanted to know.

6 schools? I’ve never heard of that. But then again it’s outer London so I suspect quite oversubscribed so it makes sense to have more choice. I imagine you probably get to choose some outer borough schools too?

Chill out, it’s January you submit the application. The schools won’t have tours out yet because they’re focusing on the year R’s that have just started this week. It’s normally November they start the school tours.

If you're applying for September 2025 you have until January and many schools haven't scheduled visit dates as of yet as they've only just opened for the term, like yesterday. We get 3 choices but you don't need to finish the application for another 3-4 months and most schools will start arranging them now. We are looking and only one of our schools have dates arranged for visits as of yet. Not even opened the application yet, probably fill it in in like December when we've seen the schools.

The open evenings are usually in October, sometimes November

So why does it say start off application process for 1st sept 2024. Sorry if I’m being slow. But surely that means I/we should start applying. Sorry I live in Colindale very crowded and I’m thinking that all these big blocks around our building including other homes and estates around this estate etc will have kids roughly around my kids age and will be applying to the schools near me that seem really good from what I see on reviews and internet.

I think because some children will already have siblings at the school. They won't need to view it so will just apply. It makes no difference if you apply in September or January as long as it's before the cut off date.

I get 6 options too. Only apply now if you are sure.. but tbh as you dont get to choose not sure how vital the visit bit really is. If there are some u know u DEFFO want then shortlist them and only visit those ur not sure about. If you can save a draft app do that to shorten process nearer the time. And then i would say early dec drop another email over. Or just ask when they open. September is a RAM time to try and do thatas therea new intakes. How early you apply doesnt mean you are more likely to get a place. Its mainly about admission criteria
