Can a midwife give you any indication on where you are at in terms of labour?

I know they aren’t mind readers but I have an appointment tomorrow at 39+6 and I’m wondering if she might be able to give me a clue of where I stand and if labour looks likely or not so likely. It’s on my notes I’m trying to avoid a sweep so I’ve been told they won’t offer me one. But will I get any other examinations?

Could they not offer a cervical check? Or is that the same as a sweep? X

They can do a cervical check, but it is pointless to determine when labour will start Ie. You could be 0cm and go into labour tomorrow, or you could be 2cm and still waiting for a week.

That is a good point @Charlie that’s sorta why I’ve asked the question really. I didn’t know if there was other signs she might be able notice for me. It kinda feels like all or nothing. If you don’t want a sweep there’s doesn’t seem to be a point in chatting about labour is what it feels like at this point. But that’s just been my personal experience. You’re just back to see how it goes mode lol

@Cody cervical checks and sweeps are two different things. However last time I was with a midwife she said if we’re not giving you a sweep then what’s the point in checking you. That’s what’s prompted this post tbh. C

Ohh thank you for clarifying x

I don’t think there’s any way to know for sure unfortunately! Like Charlie said, you could be at 2/3cm for a couple weeks before you go into active labour or be sitting at 0cm and then you get contractions one day! Definitely talk to her whilst you’re there though x

You can ask for an examination. When I had it with ny first I was told my cervix was really low, super soft, she could touch babies gear and because of all of that she thought I’d go into labour within 48 hours. Could be a pure fluke, but I did x
