Can someone tell me why schools don't start on the same day for everyone in this country??

I found job at school thinking, great no problem with childcare.I m a single parent of 8 year old...she starts school on wendesday,I start tomorrow! So I found one mum who said she can have her but she lives moles away..i m so skint,I don't even have money for taxi or uber and i would need to leave at 6.30 am to get ther and back to work! Don't know what to do...I had this problem before and my school was very unsupportive saying I need to do training because it's part of my contract!

That's super unfair. I work in a school and our HT accommodates as much as possible on training days for staff with childcare issues. Ask if you can do your training online (its usually safeguarding and H&S). Unfortunately, not all schools start on the same day and that's upto the HT, they can spread out their training days over the academic year but usually, will have 2 at the beginning and 1-2 at the end of the academic year (the others are in the middle of the year)

It is a requirement that schools run training days for staff, so there will always be a few days throughout the year where school staff have to work but the school isn’t open to students. The school calendar should be available in advance so that you can arrange childcare on those days.

At Sophie I m well aware of that however it makes no difference to me if it's available in advance.Somettiems there jur nothing I can do.I can't afford private nanny,I'm only TA.Her childminder only does pick ups after school.where I don't drive and where i live it's quite far to anywhere really. Thus find is last option but she lives far away, there no holidays clubs round here...no family...

At wildcat thanks, last time I asked for unpaid leave I had thus horrible email of my manager, she made me feel awful. There a lot of changes going on at school at the moment. We are part of new trust so I need to be in to listen to actual people,i think there's safeguarding as well, but as I said they are so unsupportive....

Well it wasn’t clear that you were well aware as your original post asked someone to explain it to you 🤷‍♀️ That’s how schools work. If you can’t make it work for you, work somewhere else.

At Sophie this is the exact attitude of Slt at ar my school. Lack of understanding and support.

Ask if you can bring her, it sounds to me this is a non student day and she is old enough to sit in your classroom or silently in the trainings!

At Jo I did this in the past but we are part on new trust and it's seems very much like we are in army! Don't ask for anything, just turn up and do the work!

As Jo said, you can ask if you can bring them along! This is what we do too! Definitely think about moving to another school if they're being unsupportive. It's always difficult managing work and children. Bit of empathy from management and support would be great though

At Jo thanks I survived today, she was with her best friend. Her mom looked after her, but it was stressful and I ve paid so much money for taxi and i m gonna have to do it again tomorrow.Just feel like I m on my own with everything and I don't like asking people for help..
