Nursery

So my little girl is starting nursery on Tuesday and I'll be using the working parent free hours. It's 15 hours a week but I'll be stretching it over the year so it's actually 11 hours per week. However my bill for the month is £160, making it not free at all. Does anyone know why this is? Is it for like food and wipes and stuff?

Every nursery is different but most charge for wrap around care i.e 8-9am and from 4pm and they also usually charge consumables such as wipes and food etc. It should be in your nurseries policy. Bit of a joke really but it’s cos they don’t get enough funding from the council.

Does the invoice not say? I know our nursery charge extra for food, nappies etc which cannot be covered by the funded hours

It’s probably because it’s over the whole year as the funding is only term time, how much is it a day if you don’t mind me asking?

Each nursery will have its own policy The nursery my children go to state the hours cannot be used between 8am and 10am, 12 noon and 1pm or 4pm and 5pm because that's when the kids eat and they need a set number of staff. We take nappies and wipes etc in to our nursery so there's no charge for those but other nurseries do charge. Essentially it's never going to be free

My nursery isn't covered for the 1st week of September. So we've had to pay for our days and a half, which is £106

I would ask them. But it could be that 1st week too

It looks like you are only using 9.5 hours funding a week

It looks like you’ve been charged for the 5 settling in sessions and for the additional hours outside of the funding. It’s odd that they haven’t told you about these charges prior to you signing baby up. We’re getting the 15 hours funding stretched over the year but there’s no additional fees. We just have to provide nappies and formula x

Our nursery only allows funding for up to 7.5hrs per day. She'll be doing 10hr days so we'll need to pay for the additional 2.5hrs. Have they got a website where it explains how they use the funded hours? Otherwise you'll have to ask them.

We’re doing 2 days a week and my September bill was £335 with the funded hours included so works out around the same price as your 1 day. We’re also doing full time so around 11 hours funded. I think the funding is only for certain hours if the day (think mine are 10-4) so I’m paying for 8-10 and 4-6. I wouldn’t be able to use all of the hours for one day if that makes sense? We also have a £10 a day charge for things like food, etc.

Thanks everyone. It seems every nursery is different. Xx

My nursery charge for some hours to top me up for a full day plus extras for nappies, Wipes and food. If you didn't stretch across the year you would still need to pay to top up for any extras that the nursery give. All nurseries charge different prices, I pay about £30 a day to stretch my hours but he is only doing 1 day a week

Ours is 2x days and is £300 after funding. They stretch the 15hrs to 11.5hrs to cover outside of term time. The £300 is to cover the additional hours (to 20) plus £12/day “consumables”. We pay £240 using the Gov tax-free account.
