Multiple children

For those who have more than one child or are planning to have another or are pregnant again, what would you say is the most expensive thing of having more than one child apart from childcare? My partner and I have been having the conversation recently of when we want to start thinking about trying for baby number 2 but are unsure whether it is worth waiting until our first is 4/5 or starting within the next year but we want to know what aspect of 2 or more children is expensive. Obviously we are aware childcare is very expensive but are hoping if the 30 hours free childcare comes in to play next year it would make the cost slightly cheaper. I’m feeling extra broody recently but am very aware of costs and want to make sure we can afford things

Honestly nothing if you keep your pram and cot and that ans some clothes you like ans just buy a few new bits it's actually cheaper. We had all our nursery furniture as we moved house we new we were going to have another baby so put the furniture in the mew nursery and got big boy furniture for our 3 year old. As we would of been doing that anyway it made no difference in cost. I kept a lot of his baby clothes I loved and we git more new bits later in but you no what you used and didn't from your first so more clued up. I got a new pram though as I hated my silver cross. And mew mattresses for the cot and next to me x

I’m 33 weeks with our second so haven’t experienced two kids yet but I would say it’s not been particularly expensive as all our stuff from our first is still in perfect condition as he’s only 15 months. I exclusively breastfed my first and hoping to do that again so won’t pay for formula. I imagine food shopping will end up being more expensive when they’re both on 3 meals and 2 snacks a day? But we’ve got a little while to go for that. And days outs paying double but again most places you don’t pay till they’re 1-2 anyway. I’m a SAHM so we don’t have to pay for childcare but by the time I go back to work they’ll be in nursery and it’ll be funded free hours. It hasn’t been expensive yet and I imagine it’ll be around age 1 -2 we will notice the difference and I’ll be back to work by then x

Food probably I have 2 kids and one on the way and the food bill is a whopper but everything else is shared

Definitely food and your house bills will go up, extra person to pay for on holidays and days out. I have a 12 and 1 year old, I’ve found with my 12 year old life is very expensive prior to school mainly because of childcare, primary school years are far more manageable financially but my gosh things get super expensive again at senior school, and the fact my son is now in adult size shoes and soon will be clothes… from age 12 you pay adult prices on holiday too! X

Just had my second baby last week, oldest is June 23 baby and I think the extra costs will be when they get older. Things like hobbies, and when they can ask for things they want etc. When they're little I don't think there is much of an extra cost x

We have a second on the way and it’ll be a 20 month age gap. I think the biggest expense will be extra nappies and clothes (we have clothes of course but might be wrong sizes for season and if boy/girl). Food wise we all eat the same so don’t think an extra portion will add too much but is another factor. I breastfed my first and hope to do the same again. As we have all the kit I can’t think of anything else that would be a huge expense on too for a second at this age. Swimming lessons/classes and as they get older those things x2. Childcare is definitely a huge expense. I’m fortunate to have good maternity and so just had to see it as if I was working then I’d be paying for care the same. I will eventually reduce her days and have 2 at home for a few days. Then hopefully when I’m back there will be free hours etc.
