Nursery assessment

Has anyone had an assessment from their nursery? We've had a report that has "range 2" "needs more focus" for every area. Should we be concerned? I'm not sure if this means my LO is a bit behind on everything?

How long has your LO been at nursery? I havent had any assessments

Only a couple of months, but they do an assessment once a year during the summer

Hi I’m sorry you have been given a report with no explanation just saying your child need more focus in every area. Does you LO have a key worker at the nursery? Have you had all your check with health visitor ?

They should write details in every box. I get full paragraphs of info

Thanks everyone. To be fair, the report is pretty detailed. It's just that it's hard to know what it means as a standalone thing. We've now arranged a meeting with the keyworker to discuss, but I was wondering if anyone else has seen the same terminology? Does "needs more focus" mean the same as "emerging skills" I've seen elsewhere? The health visitor meeting was OK but I feel they're only looking for serious issues.

I think I'm probably worrying about nothing, but I'd hate for him to fall behind without us realising

I feel like they are so young and so individual, I find it hard to appreciate which guidelines they are using to then say to you at 17/18 months they're falling behind at just genuinely progressing and growing! Maybe I'm too passive with it all but as long as happy and healthy, I would suggest just let them thrive and explore as they grow until in formal school but appreciate that you may feel differently. I also concur with the other comment to ask your health visitor if you are genuinely concerned as I wouldn't want to belittle that xxxxx

I work in a nursery and when doing reviews for a child of 18m they could be in the 8-20m bracket or the 16-26m bracket. If I’m putting them into the 16-26 they would be emerging as they’re just going into that age.

I would suggest you look at the EYFS yourself and see as it allows for children to have time to develop at their own pace. HV should check for any delay and be able to point you in right direction. I am sorry that it had caused you any worry

Thanks everyone. I spoke to his keyworker, who didn't actually have any concerns about development, so it looks like it's just a confusing rating. It's hard to know what's normal with a first child!
