Late night thoughts / reassurance please 🙏

So I was taking my multivitamin this morning - which I’ve been taking as well as my pregnacare vitamin, and I noticed something on the back which says not to take if pregnant, and it contains vitamin A. I don’t know if I have mentioned it before hand to my midwife that I am taking it, and I can’t remember if I did this in my last pregnancy, but now I feel awful, and I can’t settle. I don’t actually have any contact at the minute with my current midwife either, I just have my previous midwife’s phone number. Can someone reassure me please?

Hey first of all I wouldn’t worry, babies are pretty resilient. However I think the risk of these groups/forums is people answering medical questions with absolutely no knowledge. This is only a question for a medical professional, unless there’s a doctor on here it would be inappropriate for anyone else to comment. I would go to a pharmacy and ask a chemist or I would call my GP. But I wouldn’t panic. ❤️

No need to stress! How far along are you? I suggest getting a pregnancy-specific one now and not overthinking it. The vitamin A could only be harmful to the baby in large amounts. But you need to talk with your midwife (you can call the midwife centre and ask for advice).

I would try to contact someone for a professional opinion as they will know how much vitamin A is in there. You can stop taking them without issues as you shouldn't need anything else on top of pregnacare unless told otherwise by your midwife/doctor. Try not to stress about it, it was an honest mistake and you've realised now and could be nothing to worry about ❤️. Often the advice is very cautious!

Try not to worry. I would personally stop taking and get a pregnancy specific one and also mention to your midwife x

Breathe, the supplement alone doesn't take you over the daily limit, only if you're eating vitamin A rich foods alongside it will it be an issue (or using retinol products on your skin). Stop taking it, you can get pregnancy specific multivitamins (or just eat really well) and be really mindful of the vitamin a content of what you're eating - I don't eat anything else rich in vitamin a if I've had spinach for example. Now that you know you can change what you're doing. Some possible side effects if you've had too much will be/have been checked at your 20 week scan such as spina bifida, cleft palate etc.

Try not to stress but I would stop taking it. Also, I’ve posted on this elsewhere but Pregnacare is a low quality supplement due to it having synthetic forms of the vitamins we need. Proceive is much better quality x

Vitamin A comes in different forms, if it’s retinol definitely stop taking, carotene is okay. I have to take a multivitamin daily after having WLS and mine does have Vitamin A in it and was told it was safe to take in pregnancy by the Bariatric nurse. X
