Gym?

Hi mamas! just wanting a little advice, I used to go to the gym prior to my pregnancy and my family and friends who had kids has advised me to not go gym as it’s my first pregnancy but rather go on walks instead. I do get much more tired and easily worn out but I feel like because I’m not as active, I’m also becoming much more unfit and lazy 😂 I’m 17 weeks now, any advice on going back to the gym? I do understand the intesity won’t be the same as I used to but in terms of going and lifting, do I wait a bit more? TIA 🫶🏻 P.s any gym buddies or mamas who wants to go on walks in Colchester, let me know! 🙋🏻‍♀️🥰

If you feel up to it, then yes go to the gym! It’s good for you & baby to keep active (where/when possible). A good rule of thumb is that you can hold a conversation and not out of breath. Otherwise you can still train/workout as you like. It’s really how you feel in yourself. It’s an old way of thinking that pregnancy means wrapping yourself up. Of course some women may need to do this because of concerns or how they feel but if you are having a straightforward pregnancy then it’s outdated advice. Pregnancy isn’t an illness. Yes you need to make adjustments and be sensible but if you can then keeping strong is so important for labour and carrying around a newborn and prams/car seats etc. I have a toddler who is 10kg and been carrying her around the whole time as well as prams etc. You are training for mum life and for your physical/mental wellbeing. No diets/weight loss, just to feel active/strong. I’m still running and working out and did my last pregnancy.

There are so many prenatal workout options too if you want to follow something from a professional. Check out Midwife Pip on insta and podcasts for info on exercise in pregnancy and there’s specialist trainers like bump and burpees. If doing any gym classes just always make them aware you are pregnant. Drink lots of water too. This is a perfect time to get back into it. You may find come the later third trimester you’ll be slowing down but just keep slow & steady movement as long as you can while listening to your body.

I’ve been continuing to work out and I’m 16 weeks. It’s been great to stay active to improve my mood. I’d suggest researching pregnancy safe exercises and as you mentioned listening to your body. If you worked out before pregnancy it’s usually fine to continue from the advice I’ve received

Just workout to a level that’s most comfortable for you and avoid any level that could cause potential injury. It’s great that you want to keep active!

I continued to go to the gym with my first baby from the second trimester (too ill in first trimester) and was absolutely fine. When I got a bit bigger I swapped to swimming instead and carried that on for most of the pregnancy. It’s great to stay active just don’t over do it ❤️
