Settle a debate about September babies! 💖💙

Hey, first baby is due soon. Having a debate with the family (nothing too serious!) but we are due September 18th and the conversation went too if I end up having an August baby, that our baby would be the youngest in the school year. Then my parents went on to say even if baby comes between 1st September - 7th (ish) September. They will still be the youngest in the year as it based on school holidays/term time?!?! Just wanted to know is this correct. Seemed weird to me. I assumed in school years the youngest would be August 31st and oldest September 1st? (hoping that all makes sense!) thank you all 😊

No you’re right that born 1st September onwards is a new school year for a child

I'm a reception teacher in England and oldest would be 1st September and youngest 31st August. It may be different in other countries.

The school year runs 1st sept - 31 Aug. So 1st sept oldest in the year and 31 Aug youngest in the year.

I looked into this as my c section is this Friday (30th Aug). Any baby from 1 April-31 August can choose which year they start school! https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/summer-born-children-school-admission/summer-born-children-starting-school-advice-for-parents

We thought so! Thank you all 💖

@Fenella but it looks from this like they can start a year later but they would go straight into year 1 so therefore still be the youngest?

You have to make an admission request to start in reception but looks like it’s possible! I’m an August baby myself and never had any issues with being young. A plus is you get to save a whole year of nursery fees 🙏🏼

@Fenella my little boy was born 1st August so he can go to school either at the age of 4 or the next school year when he is five and would still start in reception. My little girl is due around 5th September so she will be going to school when she’s 5 and will be one of the eldest when she goes

@Sarah great! Thought so but thank you for confirming x
