Question for the sahm

My son just turned 2 years old last month and I keep seeing these school shootings at these elementary schools and I’m stressed about my baby going to school even tho he’s still young. How do you mamas feel about homeschooling your babies or what’s some good advice for parenting plus a good education to be using to homeschool? Pic of my baby just bc 🥰🥰

So I recently became a teacher, and one of the reasons it took me until my 30s to make that decision is because I was worried about shootings and making it home to my 3 year old. But the longer I thought about it and talked it over with family, I came to realize that the chances of a school shooting happening aren't all that different than an airplane crashing. Probably less, really. I'm not going to stop flying, because crashes are rare. I'm also not going to stop driving a car because of the risk of a crash. It's still scary to think about, but the chances are so small that I decided that it shouldn't stop me from pursuing a career I have been inclined toward since childhood, and when my son is old enough, he will attend school in my district. That being said, you should do what you feel is best for your family. Just wanted to offer a different perspective <3

I've homeschooled up until about 4 years ago. I think about this often and miss homeschooling. But my kids are doing great in school and love school... if it's something you really want to do though, I suggest looking up homeschooling laws in your state. Every state is different. Some have hours requirements, testing, and record keeping.

I plan to homeschool my 19 month old! I have other problems with the public school system, but there are tons of moms who homeschool because they're worried about safety at school

I plan to homeschool until my sister and I get our free Montessori & ES school up and running.

@Jessica I'm curious, as a teacher, how would you feel if they allowed and mandated teachers to be trained in gun safety and handling, so that if there was a shooting at your school, you could protect the classroom?

@Jessica it mainly scaring me because well that’s my baby and my little brother is 14 and keeps telling me that when he grows up he wants to be a school shooter plus threatening my mom that he’s gonna kill her. That’s been making me think a lot about what I want for my son and this generation is going to shit and private schools will have great impact on him I think

@Rachel yea I do not blame you because this generation just wants to hurt our babies

@Sierra yea I believe that eventually I’ll be able to do that but for rn i think it’s best I make sure I protect my baby

I'm a homeschool mom! You can message me if you want!

@Sierra I have zero desire to handle a gun. I am quite certain that I would never achieve enough proficiency with a gun to utilize it well. I might leave the profession if mandated to carry a gun.

@Cecilia A Your brother should be reported for threat assessment. All schools have a system for that and you can reach out to his school counselor and anonymously report him. He clearly needs help.

@Jessica I really do agree with you 100%

I'm a stay at homeschooling mama of 3 boys - 9, 6, & 2. I'd recommend searching for homescool Facebook groups for your area/state. They'll be able to help you understand your state laws on homeschooling in your state. And read a few books on homeschooling. I'd recommend How Children Learn by John Holt and Play to Learn by Peter Gray. I have a very long list of reasons we homeschool, my top reasons are.. I had children because I wanted to experience life WITH them! Not send them off to have the equivalent of a full-time job for half the year. I also wanted my children to have an actual childhood! Hours of unstructured play & time outside. I believe learning should be fun and allowed to come from our innate curiosity. Being able to wake every day & experience the real world. Real life experience will always outweigh sitting in the same room with the same 1 adult & only same aged peers for 180 days of the year. Public schools were established based on the Prussian model.

I plan to homeschool. I was bullied my entire life and don’t want that for my child My husband has his views on why he doesn’t want to send our child to school and I have my own I taught before Covid and the day we had active shooter training was enough for me too. I love shooting my gun for recreational use and for hunting but I couldn’t imagine someone using one in a school to harm myself or my child

Although we live in the USA for now. I don't plan on allowing our child to attend school here. He'll be going to school in Australia or Japan.

@Cecilia A your brother needs help, serious help. Please have your parents get him the care he needs.

@Navita ive tried to but they won’t listen to me they just won’t. They blame it on him having autism but I’ve never seen any other person who is autistic act the way he does

@Sierra it would never happen because having a gun in the classroom greatly increases the risk of children being shot no matter which way you look at it.

@Cecilia A please do not ignore his threats. That’s how these things happen. Get him the help he needs.

@Cecilia A You can't count on your parents to take action. Your brother needs help, and if your parents won't get him what he needs, they are failing him. I spent years working with kids with special needs, including autism, and my husband has an autism diagnosis. Using any diagnosis to justify bad behavior doesn't do anyone any favors. Please reach out to the police or the counselors/admin at your brother's school to report the threats so he can get what he needs. You can do it anonymously if you are worried about impacting your family connections, but don't think of it as telling on your brother - you would instead be speaking up for him. Best wishes!

Mine is 2 also and I am looking into homeschooling

@Jessica he doesn’t even go to school anymore

Im sending my kid to school because I feel its important he is taught by qualified teachers so he has the best chance, I dont feel qualified to teach any subject. I also remember growing up I had 1 homeschooled friend and her and her brother were very strange. It was like they didnt understand social norms and they just didnt fit in. However saying that, if you want to homeschool and you do everything to make sure your baby is learning just as much or more then the kids in school and you take them to play dates and activities I dont see the problem. I just wont because I dont think I would be able to. You could also try online school like ABC mouse or something similar

@Cecilia A Then report to social services/police. They take those kinds of threats seriously and will ensure he gets the help he needs.

I thought about homeschooling mine for the same reasons. I tried out homeschool preschool and it was terrible. My oldest has a very similar personality as me and we just butted heads. My husband had a bit more luck teaching him, but he has work and it just wasn't feasible. We just started public kindergarten and it's going well. It does help ease my mind that the police/fire station is right down the street from the elementary school. My advice is to try out homeschooling and see if it works for your family. You won't know until you try.

Another thing to keep in mind is that some kids do well in homeschooling, but it doesn't work for others. My son goes to daycare, even though I had originally hoped to keep him home a while longer, and he is thriving so much more - he is an only child but a social butterfly and needs the interaction with others, and he is also neurodivergent/speech-delayed and needed more than I could provide him at home, so we found a daycare we love that specializes in children like my son. He would not do well in a homeschooling environment. You know your child better than anyone; make sure you take that into consideration when making your choice, and if you do choose to homeschool, make sure to provide plenty of play group opportunities for socialization and friendship. 🥰
