Nursery

Hi, Baby isn’t born yet, but is due end of September. I’ve been working out how much annual leave I can take at the end of my maternity leave, so I know when my little one needs childcare from. Two questions I guess. Firstly, the funded childcare confuses me. I’m hoping we can get little one in a nursery for September 2025 but will his birthday/age affect that because of the terms? Secondly, if we start him off on three days there, how likely/soon is it that at some point we could boost that to five days? Are nurseries quite flexible with this? I know it’s a lot but further down the line we might want him to spend slightly longer there so he’s used to it for school. We haven’t applied to any nurseries yet but will be looking into it once we can gauge when he might actually be able to start - not sure how to approach this with nurseries for help

The funded childcare starts the term after they are that age. My little girl is 9 months in January, so funded hours will be available from Easter. In terms of increasing from 3 to 5 days it will depend on the nursery and how many spaces they have. Be open with them about this when you look around. My little boy goes 3 days a week term time and 1 day a week during holidays…. But there’s been times when I’ve needed extra and they will take him if there’s space (for an extra fee for that day) Hope that helps! Best thing is to go and look around and ask!

@Victoria thank you for your reply! so as the ages/hours are changing in 2025 as well, does this mean we’d maybe get some funded hours in the September 2025 term as he’ll be older than 9 months at that point?

As above, you’d be able to apply for the code from Easter time to start September. Providing you give nursery enough notice, you would be able to increase if there’s a space on the extra days…

Because of these hours spaced are like gold dust, do get lo on the list to start asap is my advice especially if it's a good one! Also my really good nursery has limited spaces and couldn't offer pt only ft. So bare that in mind too :) The hours are a godsend but the demand for nurseries has gone up because of it so do it as early as possible. Once you've signed with them (for a future date) your place should be confirmed 👌🏻

@Kelly-Lou thank you we’re hoping to apply soon for it so were just working out things first! do you know if we’d be able to apply soon but then let them know closer to the time about us getting funded/tax-free childcare? As we can only apply for that later on
