Tax free childcare

Hey! Thought I’d ask but my son starts nursery in September he will be going for 13 hours a week. I’ve applied for the 15 hours free childcare but how does it work when he’s only going 13 hours a week?

I believe nurseries are splitting the 15 hours entitlement across the year, as these hours are for term time only. So for example I believe for us it works out about 10 hours a week roughly, so with 30 hours a week we will be paying the remaining 20. So although your LO is only going 13 hours if the nursery splits it across the year you will likely have a remaining bill still x

@Georgia oh thank you I didn’t realise this I’ll ask the nursery!

Yeah best to ask as they can choose how to use the hours I think. Our nursery gave us a breakdown of fees based on the funded hours and how they split them over the year! Also the funded hours may not cover as much as the nursery charge. For example, if the funded hour will cover £5 per hour and the nursery fee is £8 an hour, then you will have to pay the £3 extra an hour. Hope this makes sense!

Your nursery may have a minimum number of hours per week that your LO has to attend in order to get the full 15hours funding. For us, we have to book at least 1 and a half days per week to get the full funding x

You’re also paying extra on top of hours for nursery “charges”
