Running

Looking for advice, prior to finding out I was pregnant I very active and love long distance running. I’m 7 weeks pregnant and have my booking appointment in just under 2 weeks. I’ve found out I’m pregnant and have told my immediate family/friends and they’re all very negative about me continuing to run. I of course don’t want to put the baby in any danger by running but I’ve heard that this is okay to continue? The negativity has really made me anxious but I think I’ll find it hard to not go running. Opinions please🫶🏻

As long as you feel okay, continue until you feel like you can’t anymore. Maybe do easy runs and not so intense. But my midwife said for me to carry on doing what I was already doing before pregnancy x

As long as you are comfortable it should be fine, don’t be pushing yourself for longer distances or PB’s and take things slightly easier if you need to ☺️ I have always enjoyed running, only shorter distances, but my bladder wouldn’t allow me after about 16 weeks so enjoy it whilst you can 🤣

@Katie @Sophie Thanks girls🤍

First of all I am so sorry your family is putting their own fears and ignorance first and making you anxious unnecessarily. I'm sure they come from a good place but they don't know what they're talking and should ask questions or educate themselves instead of telling you what not to do. Second, stopping running would likely put more stress on your body and I would recommend just listening to your body and if you feel good then continue to run. Like others have said, you'll likely need / feel the need to drop the pace and make sure your pelvic floor feels OK. I ran up until I was 9 weeks then started to feel too much pressure down there so stopped sadly but really want to get back into it. My pace also dropped from about 5:50 to then 6:15 to then 6:45 😂 it's very humbling but I'm not a very good nor fast runner so you might be ok. Listen to your body, I know women who ran up until their due date and they felt great! Congratulations btw! 😊🎊

@Sophie I've also recently felt like I needed a wee even after just been. I was also 15 weeks and only ran 200m so sad 😂

Hello! Congratulations on your pregnancy. Providing you are used to running and aren't classed as high risk there's no evidence to suggest running is bad when pregnant - in fact there is the opposite! It's important to stay fit for labour and recovery 🙂. I ran with both of my babies until my due date - I just adjusted depending on how I felt. Luckily I could do long distance for quite a while - but by 40 weeks I was running/walking and only on about 2 miles 🤣. But do what feels right for you - everyone's body is different xxx

I agree with the above comments. As long as you previously ran and it’s not a new activity to you, doctors and the NHS say it’s good for you to keep up your usual fitness activity. So if running is that, you should keep it up if you’re able to. Pre pregnancy I ran a lot (I’m now 25w) but have struggled to keep it up since.. so make the most of it! I follow a few pregnant runners on Instagram (one of them being ojt_runs) and she is currently 34 weeks pregnant and still running (at a high level, much higher than what I was lol) but her advice is basically not to push for PBs.. all of her runs are generally easier runs, so keeping the heart rate low. She is still running long distances, I’ve read into it and there is no evidence to say that you should stop that, but the main focus seems to be keeping your heart rate low so maybe just adjusting your pace. Good luck with it, I wish I was able to keep it up! xx

I ran right up to 32 weeks. I also done body pump classes til 36 weeks obviously with reduced weights. My Mum and sons others were quite negative and I just continued anyways. I gained 3 stone in pregnancy overall and in almost back to my goal weight. Just 2kg to go and I've been running since 9 weeks PP. No issues whatsoever. You will know when you need to take things slower.

I’m running a half marathon in October and will be 17 weeks by then! My midwife says it’s absolutely fine, just listen to your body x

@Charlotte that is so cool! 😍👏🏼💪🏼 Hope you'll feel good for it!

@Charlotte I have a half marathon booked for September, I will definitely ask my midwife for her opinion on if I should still do this x

@Aurélie haha I hope so! So far I’ve run up to 14km in one run and been absolutely fine but we’ll see if that changes as the pregnancy progresses

My advice was as long as you currently run, it’s absolutely fine. I specifically asked about running a half marathon and she said it doesn’t matter the distance. The only concern was she didn’t want my core body temp to raise too much so I’ve just been running in zone 2 mostly, and if it’s too hot outside I’ll run on a treadmill instead. Feel free to message me if you have any other questions before your booking appointment x

Check with your midwife but when I spoke to mine she was happy with me carrying on with everything I would normally do. I carried in running until 25 weeks, however I started to get pelvic pains so my midwife told me to stop immediately. I also wore a support belt to help me- which I think allowed me to run further into my pregnancy than others. It’s your body- just listen to what it’s saying. It doesn’t matter what others say- you will soon understand that everyone will have an opinion about everything you do :D Having a positive mind frame and mentality is key during pregnancy is also a huge thing to keep focusing on- those exercise endorphins will really help. Good luck xxx

i ran a half marathon 13 weeks in! as others have mentioned, if you were doing a type of exercise before you were pregnant, should be safe through the 1st trimester for sure as long as you are feeling okay doing it. after the 1st trimester, there may be some core restrictions as well as weights but i mostly stuck with the same workouts all the way through. i did stop trying to do PRs in weightlifting and focused more on maintaining and endurance sets vs progressive overload in the 3rd trimester.

Go with how you feel! I ran a half marathon at 22weeks pregnant and was happily running till around 30 weeks but then has some ligament pain around my bump! You know your body xx

I ran my entire pregnancy, even at 39 weeks! And I had a very healthy baby. I took my runs slow and gentle but I never wanted to give up and I felt great! I got negative comments from some people but my doctors said it was fantastic that I was running so ignore the negative comments! Xx

@Charlotte good luck! I’m doing one at 16weeks next week! I’m not a runner usually but been taking training easy so it’ll be slow but hopefully we can do it!
