Hand foot and mouth and nursery

How long would you keep your child off nursery for if you suspect they have HF&M? NHS website says there’s no need to keep them off until all spots are gone.

I'd speak to the nursery as they may have their own policy, and will be aware of any staff or kids who are immunocompromised that should avoid HF&M.

NHS guidance says as long as they don't have a fever and aren't unwell you can send them in. Inline with nursery guidance of fever free for 24 hours

Should keep home until scans have formed on the spots..before that they are very contagious

Hand foot and mouth can be passed on as long as there are spots that aren’t scabbed. I would say keep them off till spots are basically gone personally. Myself and my boy got over it a few months back and it was really hard on us. Wouldn’t want to risk passing that on to anyone You’ll need to be wiping down surfaces that y’all touch so at the end of day before you go bed just go through and wipe what you can it stays on what you touch and breath it

@Belle that's only chicken pox

@Savannah here in sa Adelaide it isn't.. we had it at daycare.. and daughter wasn't aloud to come back until the scans had formed

@Savannah went into hospital for my boys one as I didn’t know what it was. Was told if he was In nursery to wait till everything scabbed before taking him back

Suppose it is worth the OP stating where she is. Local government advise is no need for scabs to form as long as children are unwell it's fine as it's futile to try and contain. My kids never had scabs

Whatever the nursery is happy with that aligns with the wellness of your child. If they’re better and meet the nursery criteria they can go in. Mine both felt unwell for a couple of days with it but were back on day 3 or 4.

Every nursery I’ve worked in they’ve been allowed in as long as they’re well in themselves. If I had the choice eg was out of work, I would keep them home until scabbed to try and control infection. But if I was working, and my child was well and allowed in, I would send them in, purely because kids are unwell so often with things that they DO need to be kept off for, so I don’t really want to be losing money if they can go in.

My LG had it a few weeks back. As she didn’t have a fever and was happy in herself, nursery took her as normal. She didn’t have many spots that were visible, just her knees, fingers and feet. They disappeared quite quickly too.

Your nursery will have their own Policy on it
