Extra folic acid. Why?

Just spoke to my GP about my medication as I'm disabled and have chronic pain, they are happy for me to stay on my medication as there isn't really any risk and I'd be so ill without them but they have put me on extra folic acid to take along side my pregnancy vitamins but didn't really explain why just that it's better? Anyone know the reason why I've been given more?
