Nursery visit

Hi! I have a show-around at a nursery this week for the first time. Are there any questions I should ask or things I should look for? It’s all totally new to me 🙈

See how happy the carers are, see if a child is crying, is he attended to. Good to go around meal times to see what the food looks like, they also should have a menu. The set up and toys probably look the same everywhere, so I’d go for the general feel of the place. If you’re going back to work, check if the baby won’t be placed in another group by the time you pick them up. Also how often and long are the settling in sessions

It depends what’s important to you, but I would ask… What’s included in the price? What do you have to provide? (Meals, nappies, wipes, etc) How do they communicate with parents? (Many use an app) How often and how long do the children play outside? Where do they sleep? Can you see the menu for the next couple of weeks? Do they do any off-site visits and if so, how are those organised? How do they deal with problematic behaviour? How many rooms do they have and how do they decide when a child is ready to change rooms? How do they cover staff absence? Are they currently fully staffed? When was their last Ofsted inspection and what was the grading? I’d also be looking at how the staff interact with the children, whether the staff seem to know the children well, what type of activities the children are doing, whether there are enough staff there for the number of children, etc Good luck!

I've worked in Nursery's for 10 years and left a couple of years ago It's all about what you think would suit you and your baby My little girl is adventurous, curious and has plenty of energy I chose an all outdoor nursery also speak to staff you genuinely get vibes from people and know if you'd feel comfortable But the questions in the previous comment are good general ones to ask, don't be afraid to go back for a second or third visit somewhere if you do ask to go at a different time to before Good luck finding the one ❤️

Ask about their policy on medicine. I had to change my lg nursery as hers closed down. Her original nursery were fine if I gave her calpol that morning ie for teething. Her current nursery will not accept her if she’s had any medicine that morning and you have to collect her within an hour if they have to administer emergency calpol

Ask for the daily routine, activities, outside time, nap schedules. You can also go on GOV UK website and review their full Ofsted report and the grading with areas of improvement so you can get a better feel of how Ofsted view their performance as an organisation, I would personally read this first before booking a viewing, and you can have a look at the Google reviews also to make a joint decision if you want to go and view it in person. Also staff, do they look happy, miserable etc. Everything else Sophie has covered well :)
