Breastfeeding over 2 year old

I have a 2 year old who’s almost three that was bf until 2 and then weaned. I now also have a newborn who I bf and my toddler wants to go back to bf. I’ve tried explaining it’s for the baby and they are too big for it now and offer normal milk instead but it’s been the same argument and tantrum for the past few weeks. I know Islamically it’s recommended to bf until 2 but I can’t find anything about if it’s ok for over 2 yr olds. Has anyone experienced this and what do you advise? Idm bf them but I don’t want to get into the habit if it’s not permitted.

I stopped breastfeeding my little one at age 3, went through a similar situation where I weaned him at 2years then started again and weaned him off again, you just have to stick to it, be consistent and firm but if it’s causing your toddler unnecessary distress then you should continue to feed him. The child benefits from breast milk up until age 2 but there’s nothing to say you can’t continue beyond that age.

How did you both wean your 2 year olds? I have no idea where to start when she turns 2 soon inshaa’Allah

@Aishah🤍 thank you for the reassurance. I think having the new baby and seeing them bf is causing abit of jealousy. I’m going to be more firm with it as they were weaned 6 months ago, so shouldn’t be too hard x

@Zara drop the day feeds first as it easier since you can distract with other things. Drop them one by one and then eventually the night feeds. Took me about a month to completely wean. Also stop offering the breast for comfort and give it only when they ask for it. Be careful not to go cold turkey as you can get mastitis. Hope that helps x

Thank you so much for replying, it’s so helpful to have someone’s perspective who’s been through it as I don’t know anyone who’s bf’d up to this age!
