Anyone else a ‘solo parent’

Anyone else have a partner in the army/oil rigs or generally works away from home for long periods?? My boyfriend works 3 weeks on and 1 week off and sometimes gets home at the weekend. He is the main provider for us and I am so so grateful for him, however sometimes definitely struggle considering I don’t have any family etc in Manchester, luckily my MIL is always happy to help. Think it would be nice to have other people in the same situation and get a wee group going😊 (Please don’t take offence to the title, just not sure what to class myself as,not a single parent but basically am a large majority of the time)

My husband was deployed for the first half of the year. I refered to it as deployment induced solo parenting. It was hard as shit with 2 littles, but the biggest things I learned were ask for help when you need it, and lower the bar: take your MIL up on any and all offers of help and let the house look lived in

@Charlotte wow!!! 6 months??? That’s tough! Yeah I’m not the best with asking for help tbh , oh the house defo looks loved in which my bf hates, will come home and question why it’s such a mess🫠🫠🫠🫠

@Rachael If your bf hates it, he can clean it instead of spending time with you and his child or pay for a cleaner to come in...

My partner works so much and I find it really hard sometimes. Especially in the early stages it was awful

@C does he work away from home?? In the beginning my bf had 7 weeks paternity leave which was fab but I do struggle even now with a 1 year old!

@Rachael he did at the start! He only had three days annual leave when the baby was born and it was horrific when he went back to work. Now he works from 7/8am and gets home about midnight. It’s exhausting

Me too

@C wow!!! That’s a long ass day! Mine is a wind turbine engineer so can be in Finland,Scotland ,Germany etc so he can’t always be home at the weekend so waiting 3 weeks! I bet! Your in very similar situation to me, it’s reallly hard! Think cos we’re thinking about baby 2 but worried on how I could cope!

@Sophie awww no way, does your bf work away?? How do you cope ?x

Mine is a HGV tramper, so goes work Tuesday and doesn't get home until Saturday night, and does every 2nd week overtime so is away from the Monday- Saturday. Solo parent 5/6 days a week and have done since baby was 2 weeks old. My LB is now almost 9 months and it is getting easier doing it alone

I'm also in Manchester btw x

@Ocean Yeah it has gotten easier defo! Just shit isn’t it! Don’t get to just chill or shower/pee In peace and it’s a huge load being the default parent!!!

@Rachael yes , most times we’ll get a day on the weekend together if he’s able to and longer if he gets time off , it is hard and time goes so fast when we do get to see eachother but it’s so worth it 💓 how about you xx

Same here I’ll be int the group

@Sophie Yeah so my bf does 3 weeks on ,1 week off but he’s only working in Scotland rn so he can come home Saturday afternoon and goes back up on Sunday so not loads of time! It’s hard going to work, getting up early with lo and being the default parent constantly! I had to take 2 days off work unpaid this week because my daughter was ill and childminder wouldn’t have her! Just small things get to me and reallllly irritates me ngl

A group would be lovely

@Rachael it’s because of the travelling it’s awful. It’s the exact reason we haven’t tried for baby number 2. I just know that I wouldnt be able to cope and he would spend most of the time worried and feeling guilty he has left us to work x

@C this is our current issue,I’ve got a 1 year old and talking about number 2 but he’s nervous he’ll worry the whole time aswell! It’s a lot!
