Is miscarriage sick leave pregnancy related?

I had a miscarriage recently requiring surgery and had a couple of weeks off work. I was due to return but I am really struggling mentally with the loss and so my gp has certified me with a few more weeks for ‘mental health due to miscarriage’. My manager has put it as ‘stress/mental health’ leave, but I was under the impression that sick leave due to miscarriage is pregnancy related sick leave - does anyone know?

I would say this counts as pregnancy related, I had time off after a miscarriage and my work labelled it as normal sick time but changed it when I questioned it. I think there's a cut off, for example if it's more than so many months after miscarriage then it doesn't count as pregnancy related anymore. Definitely question it because you don't want it on your sickness record if you can avoid it, especially if it will take you into sickness management which I personally found very stressful as well. Firstly i want to say im so sorry for your loss 🤍 Secondly I would say it should be as you wouldnt be go through all this had you not been pregnant. However, knowing usual work clauses with most things I would say extended leave due to mental health around the MC probably wouldnt be classed as pregnancy related as technically you are no longer pregnant 🤷🏼‍♀️. I would double check with HR if I were you.

I had a look at the Maternity policy for our trust and it says normal sick leave applies for a miscarriage if it is before the 25th week. According to the Maternity Action website it is up to the GP to certify whether it is pregnancy related.

I experienced the same, and my leave was classed as pregnancy related. Maybe check your policy, or with HR. It should say. Sorry, hope you’re ok

You should get a 2 week period off now due to the new law. Anything after that won’t be classed as pregnancy related. I lost my daughter at 23+6 last year and didn’t get anything. Had to get a sick note for 6 months x
