The secret to cooking rice

Please, can someone tell me what’s the secret to cooking rice? No matter what I do it always comes out sticky and a big blob. My partner is Nigerian so he loves to eat rice and I just feel like I’m failing at it 😫

Different rice has different stickiness levels. We just add loads of water and drain it off at the end (Basmati or Jasmine rice) if we want sticky rice for Asian food we use a little rice cooker. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/r.html?C=148LYIXGS6DN9&K=371MD038V5V8F&M=urn:rtn:msg:20180723083026233321caaa7f453db7cd9349fad0p0eu&R=2HN9H7YY45BXF&T=C&U=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.co.uk%2Fdp%2FB00HRJ3680%3Fref_%3Dpe_3187911_248764861_302_E_DDE_dt_1&H=JDBG3WOEWZJM828THUT48U3YAQ8A&ref_=pe_3187911_248764861_302_E_DDE_dt_1

We either have basmati or long grain. I do 1 cup of rice to 2 cups of water. Maybe I’m not using enough water 🤔

I just get my partner to cook it 🤣🤣

rinse it really well until the water runs clear before you cook it, get all the starch off

you really need to get your hands into the bowl and mix it right through when rinsing the water off before you cook it and when it's done, run it under hot water after its cooked!

Soaking it for a while first. The right amount of water. And absolutely fool proof is putting pot in the oven on low after bringing it to boiling on the hob.

Normally the ratio for water that I use is 1 cup of rice 2 cups water. I leave it on high heat until the water is hot and boiling then lower it and cover.. If not I use the method above.. by using my finger. Sometimes after I wash my rice... I put it in a hot pan with oil and fry it before boiling it. You could also use your rice cooker as well.

Sounds like you’re not using the right pan. You need a bottom heavy pot for rice to cook evenly and well.

This is a fail safe way to cook rice! And I could never cook it before until I was taught properly now it’s perfect every time: Rinse the rice until the water is more clear, you’ll need to rinse then pour and replace a good few times until the water is less cloudy, this removes the starch that makes it sticky. 2 cups water to 1 cup of rice, bring to the boil in saucepan and then turn the heat down as low as possible and keep a lid on it, when checking try to replace the lid as quickly as you can, you don’t want to let all the steam out. Then when the rice has absorbed all of the water take it off the heat and leave the lid on and let the rice steam for 10-15 minutes before serving. Always gives me perfect fluffy rice! Oh and also lots of salt 😂🤪 and sometimes I add things like fennels seeds to flavour the rice.

Get a rice cooker

Wash the rice with water, use your rice finger, and cook until the water is gone... Works every time!

i’d probably use less water actually 1 cup rice to 1.5 cup water

We cook it a few ways. Good quality rice cooks better I have found. We use Tilda basmati. Preferably after rinsing the starch off, soak it for about 20 minutes. In an open pan use enough water to cover the rice and about an inch and a half more (I never measure 🙈). Put on high and as soon as it gets a good rolling boil, turn it down to the lowest or 2nd lowest setting and the water will gently absorb into the rice in about 15 minutes. I just keep checking if it is ready. You can also steam it so basically everything the same apart from a bit less water and use a lid on pot/pan then take it off the heat after 10 minutes and keep the lid on for 10 minutes so it can continue to cook in the steam. It tastes best this way I think. I make jeera rice this way. The 3rd way we sometimes make it is in the pressure cooker but my husband does that so I can't provide the method. The pressure cooker is his department 😂

You’re probably cooking it for too long. It only takes 10 minutes to cook. The water level should be slightly above the rice

Get a rice cooker! My mum bought be a v fancy one back from Thailand and comes out amazing every time with little effort on my side, I just go by the lines inside the pot for water based on how many cups I put in. My friend recently bought a yumasia one I think from Amazon, and has been a game changer for him.

Definitely a rice cooker, we have a tefal multi cooker now so does excellent rice but can do many other foods in it,

Rinse it really good until the water runs clear. I like to toast my rice in butter for a few minutes after rinsing it, then add enough water to cover by about an inch. Bring it to a boil, add chicken bouillon and garlic powder and stir. Let it boil for 5-10 minutes until it noticeably thickens and then turn it off and cover for another 10-15 minutes until all the water is absorbed and the rice is cooked through.

Rinse your rice off til clear and not to much water. Do a 1:1 ratio

Okay I swear by this method, it’s simple, easy to follow and I’ve never had any issues with my rice.. https://www.recipetineats.com/how-to-cook-rice/#wprm-recipe-container-39732

I'm Chinese and both my mum and partner are chefs. We all use rice cookers. Life is busy enough without having to watch or time your rice. Our current rice cooker was €16 from Lidl and cooks perfect rice in 15 min then keeps it warm. The biggest mistake people make when using a rice cooker is not washing their rice beforehand. As well as washing off the starch, you should be washing it for hygiene reasons. If you saw what rice goes through before it lands in your pantry you'd definitely want to wash it well before cooking!

@Ella 恩慈 💯 i worked in a chinese restaurant for 3 years, i learned so much and washed so much rice then put it in the large rice cookers

Thank you everyone for all your responses. I wash the rice until the water is clear, we also have a rice cooker but still same results. But there is some great suggestions here that I’m going to try next time and hopefully I have better results. If not I call defeat and I’m just not a rice cooker 😂

A few key points, I always use basmati 1. Wash rice thoroughly 2. Put cold water about 1cm above the rice, or to first crease in finger when touching the top of the rice. 3. High heat until boiling, then low heat until water has been absorbed and holes start appearing in rice. 4. Once water is absorbed, turn heat off, cover and let steam for 10-20minutes 5. Fluff with fork. Always comes out perfect for me x

Fellow wife of a Nigerian here and he says I cook rice better than him. Put the rice in cold water and wait for it to start bubbling and you’ll see the starch coming to the top. Rinse it once, twice, three times until the waters clear. Then cover the rice with water and back on the hob until the water has gone and you can hear pah pah pah and I know you will know exactly the sound I’m making right now!

Rice cooker. Either follow their instructions or use a pot- measure out your rice, first rinse til clear, just 2:1 ratio, all in the pot, top on &boil a few minutes then turn down low and leave for 25 min. Rice doesn’t need constant attention, that might be why it’s coming out that way. Best to just get a rice cooker, with kids, they’re better anyway so you can cook the rest of the meal and not take up more space on the stove.

How’s the rice cookin’, OP?

Every 🍚 rice is different, cooking depends on the type of rice. Basmati vs. Long Grain vs. Jasmine, etc Sometimes it is 1-1, sometimes 2-1 water to rice. The easiest thing to do is get a rice cooker even if you can cook rice on stove top, if you eat rice a lot. It saves time and energy. I've done spanish rice in a rice cooker - had saute feature. Choose features you know you'll need - if going that route.
