Urine infection

Hey I've just had a call from the hospital to say that I have a urine infection and need antibiotics. I have no symptoms at all, is this possible with a UTI?? My appointment was a week ago (when I gave the urine sample), and have probably felt my best yet so far in this pregnancy in this past week 😂 I'll take the antibiotics if I absolutely need them but I'm wondering if they've got it wrong somehow? I'm currently on holiday too so can't go back to the midwife for another test x

If you’re non symptomatic maybe send another sample when you’re back? Seems unnecessary to take antibiotics if you’re well with it. Focus on drinking plenty in the meantime 😊

@Hannah this is what I thought. I missed their call so need to ring back tomorrow, I'll see if it's an option to wait. Thank you

I’ve had 2 utis and I don’t get symptoms either. No stinging when weeing or anything. If I get another I have to go for a scan on my kidney and urethra. They’ll probably give you a weeks course of Nitrofurantoin which is safe in pregnancy.

Yes, not all UTIs require antibiotics so definitely wise to query this😊 but no harm if you do need to take them as well x

I mean, depends on what the infection is. It is possible it has passed on its own, but it’s also possible it can get to your womb and be harmful to baby if not. I had 2 infections this pregnancy and took it both times even though I was asymptomatic because I had 2 miscarriages before and couldn’t forgive myself if anything happened to baby this time around- not saying it will and not saying it is your case at all. I don’t want to make you fearful of it, just saying that it isn’t too simple. If you have a good travel/health insurance plan for this trip, could you retest whilst there? xx

Thanks girls - I know there can be a risk from UTIs in pregnancy I'm just not convinced I have one at all! I've had one in the past and was unwell with it, but didn't know if you could have them without symptoms. I'll speak to the midwife tomorrow and see what she says. Im happy to take antibiotics if they're needed. But equally my daughter had lots of side effects as a baby because of the antibiotics we both had to take after birth so I don't want to take them unnecessarily 😅

I’ve had two UTIs this pregnancy and 6 (!!) my last pregnancy, one that lead to me going into preterm labor with bleeding and contractions in week 32. Because I didn’t take the antibiotics!! So please just take the antibiotics if they prescribe them, they know what they’re doing and UTIs in pregnancy are different to normal ones and can be completely without symptoms.
