New job-beginner

Hi ladies, the job (apprenticeship) I’m doing now isn’t suitable (in my eyes) for when I come off maternity leave. It’s a 7:30-4pm job everyday on a bank transfer payment for money(meaning I get taxed and stuff and lose a lot of my wage). I’ve been thinking of starting a lash extensions business but have no idea where to start or becoming a makeup artist which obviously I can become self employed and have cash payments/ bank transfer payment only so I don’t get taxed and get to keep what I earn for me and my baby and family. Would anyone know where to start with become a lash extensions tech or a makeup artist and how I would do it when I have a baby on maternity leave and only have a year off my current job as I want to stay until I leave with full qualifications in makeup or lashes so I don’t go months/weeks with any earnings. Can someone advise me or let me know where I can start to learn how to be a lash or makeup artist as I have no idea- I’m currently I electrical engineer and have nothing to do with beauty but I’m really interested in it and it’s what I want to do rather that the job I’m currently in as it was just a money kind of thing and not that happy here.

I’ll be honest I’ve looked into it too! Realistically the costs for a decent course are really quite high, then you’d have to build your portfolio (lots of free/highly discounted sets of lashes!) there’s also different courses for every set of lashes - classic, Russian, hybrids etc. You’ll still “get taxed” as you’d claim self employed, so you’d have to fill out all of your own tax returns and keep on top of that. With also being self employed, if you had another child (ignore me if this is irrelevant😅), you’d receive MA which is based on your earnings - my hairdresser has gone on mat leave and is getting around £40 a week! Then if you did go to a salon and hire a chair for example, you’d have to pay the rent for the chair. Then you have to consider buying the materials you use. It is a lot to consider, you’d really have to weigh up the pros and cons of everything about it. You 100% could do it on mat leave - but do need support there for you and baby☺️

Just to add to this^ You also have to consider the number of customers you’d realistically have, especially when starting out. Your whole income depends on how many sets of lashes you’ve done that week. If you charge £40-50 for a classic set of lashes, and only manage to get 4 clients booked in that week, you’re only coming away with a maximum £200 that week.

You’d be crazy to give up an electrical engineering apprenticeship, that will build you such a good career for you and your baby. The commenter above has given you some really good advice.

You will still be taxed as self employed. You have to self declare everything you earn. I completely understand your frustration in not wanting to go back to work or wanting to change so you can spend more time with your baby. I am in the same position. If you are set on becoming self employed, which only YOU can decide if you believe it is the best option for you and your family, then you should reach out to the college you do your apprenticeship with to see if there are any in your chosen field. Sometimes we have to sacrifice what we originally thought we wanted when we have a baby, sometimes we don't, so really have a chat with the college and see if there is anything that can be done and go from there.

If you are not happy in electrical engineering, now is the best time to change your apprenticeship regardless

You can message me if you want, I’m an electrical engineer (Controls / Plc’s to be specific) you’ve such good earning potential long term depending in what you actually end up doing Please don’t leave it to become self employed, you’ll still be taxed and it’s such a saturated market that’s difficult to build a good wage on

Definitely finish your qualification. Engineering is a good gateway to other careers. I know people who’ve become accountants, some teachers some complete career changes after finishing there degree

What if I just do it weekends?

You'd still have to pay tax but then you wouldn't have the worry of needing to make a certain amount.

Nothing stopping you if you can find a decent training course that runs on weekends, once qualified you could even do it as a little side hustle on evenings and weekends just to top up your apprenticeship wage. Just remember you’ll need to register aw self employed, sort out the tax and insurances ect
