Random question - sensory issue??

Does anyone know why or has their little one done the same thing as mine in this video? We did painting hands when she was about 8 months and she did the retching and we didn’t think anything of it but we did it again the other day and it was a strong reaction 🤔 We baked some bread today and when she came to help me with kneading she started retching again! She is fine with food on her hands, soap, mud, bubbles etc so not sure why it’s the paint in particular and/or the bread??

Following. She is so cuuuuute!!

Could be the smell? Or possibly the thicker texture? One of my kids did the gagging one time while finger painting. But the paint was super thick and gloopy and I thought it smelled disgusting.

How old is she now? Does she attend nursery, if she does ask if they have noticed her do anything similar. It could just be certain smells she doesn’t agree with. It could be a sensory issue. Maybe keep note of what she does if too. Repeat the activities a few times and see if her reaction changes too. (I’m a nursery deputy manager) x

Also are you sure it’s a reaction to what she’s doing, and she hasn’t had a bit of mucus stuck down her throat etc? x

@Jane I’m biased but sameeee 🥰

@Rebecca no the paint was a non-toxic one with no particular smell and the bread dough is odour less too really! It could be cos it was thick just seemed two very different textures 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Bianca she is 22 months and doesn’t go to nursery.. it’s only been with paint and the bread today which is what prompted me to ask. We went to the park yesterday and she was happily putting her hands in mud and puddles and I thought mud was the same kinda texture as the paint? I’m gonna try a couple different textures and see if the same thing occurs, I’m not worried just found it a bit odd and wondered if it was a common thing?

@Bianca I don’t think so cos it’s been three separate occasions and I between spreading the paint on her hand she was talking and acting normal and with the bread today too. No recent colds and in good health so don’t think that could be it 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Amy Gotcha. It could be a sensory thing then, I would just keep an eye on it and keep track of when it happens. One of my kids doesn’t really like play dough or slime and also doesn’t enjoy painting much (but loves to color). No other sensory issues though, so I’m not concerned at the moment 🤷‍♀️

This is me with stoneware lol it gives me chills and makes me gag. Just a super gross texture😂

@Rebecca I’m very much a ‘don’t like my hands dirty’ person but never shown that around her as since having her I’m like ‘everything can be cleaned and I’m ok’ 😂 Just extra sensitive to different textures I guess?

@Shay really that’s so interesting 😂 I guess it could just be an individual quirk of hers!

Possibly?😂 I think if it was multiple textures or noises over a long period of time then I'd be worried. I would follow your mom gut. Every mom knows their babies better than anyone including medical professionals.

I can’t offer an explanation but just wanted to say my daughter hates finger paint and ONLY finger paint too! She sobbed and freaked out all three times I’ve tried it with her. Loves mud, likes getting wet, spreads yogurt all over herself every day. We’ve never kneaded dough so I can’t say how she feels about that 😂 Really disappointing for me as I am super crafty and had so many aspirations for adorable finger/hand/foot print crafts! I’m still hoping she might grow out of it and I’m gonna keep trying different textures of paint to see if I can find one that doesn’t bug her… Your girl looks like a sweetie though and hey, could be worse! At least they aren’t rubbing paint all over the walls 😂😂

I cant stand dry textures which would include kneading dough and also paint on hands when it starts to dry! So could be that?

@Shay yeah I’m not worried more curious about it. My mum said maybe when she starts to talk she can explain the feeling and why she it makes her do it! Doesn’t stop her from doing it cos she kept coming back to knead the dough 😂😂

@Rhiannon yeh I totally get the weird sensation.. it’s almost a tickley thing so can see why kids/adults wouldn’t like the feeling! Oh that’s so annoying 🤞🏻 she grows out of it and you can get crafty! 😂 This is very true, although my husband is a decorator so I think it would just give him an excuse to repaint the house 😂

@Cesca yeah I’m finding out a lot of people have unique experiences when it comes to textures! I love how everyone has their own little quirk!

For me, I have two main texture issues - raw fish/sushi and cotton balls (I shudder from the little scrunchy squeak they make). We’re all unique and have different sensory preferences! If it’s just one or two things, it may just be her own little quirk 😊
