Utensils??

When should we start introducing/teaching utensils? My 14 month old seems to want to try and use them on his own but is entirely unsuccessful. He obviously eats some things off a spoon or fork but fed by me. Every now and then I can hand him a spoon and he’ll feed himself. He started recently taking an empty spoon, and trying to place a piece of his food in it. I’ve kind of been letting him just play with them and be familiar, but when can we expect any sort of actual progress?

I’ve always let my children have use of a spoon from the beginning of weaning. Now at 2yr old, she can use her spoon and fork ☺️

I just start with my 12 months. It's not really working yet but it's all about practice I guess. (We started yesterday). He always eats with his hands. I think it's whenever you want to start the teaching

Start now with spoon and something thick like yogurt where he can simply dip the spoon and eat some. You can try pre-loaded forks as well. He will learn

I think for now you can help by pre loading the spoon/fork & he can feed himself. Eventually when you see that he’s getting the hang of it, let him feed himself a yoghurt or something of thick consistency that is easy to load. He’ll catch on very quickly!

I preload a spoon and hand it to my 7mo, but a few times she's grabbed the spoon off the plate after I've put it into some food and she's brought it up to her mouth, so I'd say definitely start trying to encourage ASAP and see how it goes 😊
