@Leah I have called literally over a dozen OB’s and I cannot for the life of me find one that takes my insurance. I just dont understand how the system is set up so that I can go without prenatal care and go into labor and they’re fine with it. What if something was wrong that needed treatment immediately?
It does NOT seem normal. They have emergency medi-cal. Which you qualify for bc you are pregnant. That's approved right away, and you're able to see doctors and then eventually you end up picking your plan and your doctor because emergency medical is basically just plain general medical coverage
Hi! So sorry you’re experiencing this. I had a very similar situation. Moved here beginning of August at 23 weeks and had already been approved for medical. Called a ridiculous amount of OB offices who all stated “we can look over your medical records, but it’s unlikely that you will be seen due to how far along you are”… I was also told that this far along, we are a “liability” to doctors. I got these phrases for weeks. Extremely upsetting and couldn’t wrap my head around so many offices denying me prenatal care. Mentioned several times that I this is NOT a high risk pregnancy nor do I have health concerns - didn’t matter. At 27 weeks I noticed a decrease in fetal movement and took myself to a hospital that I had previously researched. (Had a NICU, decent reviews, and accepts Medical) The ER took me straight to the newborn & women’s triage. The triage was baffled at how long I had been seeking prenatal care. When the on call OB saw me I asked for advice in finding an OB.
She scheduled a follow up appointment with me at her practice two days later. At my follow up appointment, she told me that I was now under her care and she/ the rest of the Dr would finish off my prenatal care 🙌🏽 It was a miracle the way it all unfolded in the end. At 30 weeks, you have every reason to have every concern/wonder/curiosity in the world about you and your baby. Take yourself to a hospital that accepts your medical and be seen. Your reasoning can be as simple as - I’m 30 weeks pregnant and haven’t been seen since ____. The least that’ll happen is you’ll receive a routine check up and baby will be monitored for at least 30min to an hour. Express your situation/concerns and ask them if they can provide you with info on their OBs.
@Marissa tysm for your response. I’m heading to the ER today, that was my only idea also. I absolutely hate the thought that this is happening to so many women, I’m glad you were able to find care ♥️ We deserve better than this.
@Marissa update! Went to the ER yesterday and they checked me out. Did my anatomy scan (baby girl looks great, already almost 4 pounds) did bloodwork, and did the 1 hour glucose test. They also gave me information for a clinic that should see me and if they won’t I have the name of three different OB’s through the hospital. I feel so much better now! Thank you again for your advice 🫶🏻
If you go into labor your insurance should still cover it! For example my son was born 3 month early and i only have private insurance at the time i didnt apply for medical until we were discharged and they went back 90 days and covered my sons entire NICU stay it was 2 billion dollars 🥴 but i do find it weird that you have to have a referral for an OB have you called an OB office? When I found out i was pregnant i just needed to make sure the office accepted my insurance no referral was needed
