Glucose test information

Hey! So I’ve got my glucose test tomorrow 8:45. However I’ve not been told anything 🙃 Can’t get through to the midwife either. I’m wondering if anyone can tell me… 1. When do I need to start fasting? 2. Can I still drink water? Thanks in advance 🥰

I’m in the US so I don’t know what may be different but we aren’t told to fast for our test. Drinking water is okay and they recommend eating a good low sugar breakfast. Eggs, toast, etc

Some people are told to fast. I would fast because I feel like that’s more likely they want you to do that. I would start fasting around 10pm to midnight. And I would only drink water if you really had to. I get super thirsty at night so I had to a bit and I had to for my medication so still do that but don’t just drink water to drink water

And if you can get through and they say you don’t have to fast they still told me no carbs or sugar. So for me I had eggs and bacon for one pregnancy the other I had to fast. But wouldn’t eat anything that could spike it before your test like toast. Your sugars need to be as low as possible so when you do the drink they can see how it affects you

Don’t eat anything after 5-6pm tonight, drink as much water as you’d like!! You’ll be at the hospital for a couple of hours, they give you a sugary drink and monitor how your body reacts to the glucose. I had no clue either I expected to be in and out and ended up sat there for hours bored out of my mind so take a charger, neck pillow to pass the time :) hope everything goes well lovely. Also take urself something you can munch on afterwards because you’ll be starving! I treated myself to a McDonald’s hahaha well deserved in my opinion.

I would call your provider and ask for instructions. Most places have different policies. I was told I could eat normally before my test while a friend was told to fast from the night before.

The reason I say to not drink all the water is because it can mess with results. And you really don’t want to mess with them. Drink it when needed but don’t try to drink a ton because you think it could help because it won’t help it’ll be a problem

Hi OBGYN PA here! You do NOT need to be fasting for the 1 hour test!

According to my letter for my GTT in November, my appointment time is 9.25am. It says to fast from midnight, and that you can have a few sips of water until they tell you otherwise. Good luck. X

UK MUM - the way we do it here is different to the US, so, respectfully, ignore all those comments!! You will need to fast from about 12 hours before your test, when you get to the hospital they will do a blood test, then you’ll drink a sugary drink, wait for 2 hours (take a tablet or a book) then you’ll have another blood test. You cannot eat anything between the blood tests but you can drink a little water, I was given a bottle with the amount I was allowed to have for the duration. I recommend taking a snack to have afterwards before you drive home as I felt a little weak.

@N 💞 yes thank you for sharing that’s gonna be very helpful

I’ve got one at 9am and my letter says to fast from 10pm the night before and only have still water

Thank you ladies!! Literally been told nothing. Just the time on my pink notes 🙃🤦🏼‍♀️

I've got mine in a couple of weeks and my letter says not to eat anything after 8pm the night before for an 8.30am appointment

When I had mine I was told I did not have to fast. I ate breakfast like normal then went in. I just tried to avoid anything super sugary. The only time was the hour between drinking the drink and the blood test that I was told not to eat or drink anything

I had my GTT done a few weeks ago (in the UK) you have to fast from 10pm the night before. No food afterwards and water to drink only. No medication after 10pm or smoking/vaping otherwise they reschedule the test. You have your bloods done first thing, drink the glucose straight away (I found it tasted like a flat sprite) wait two hours in the waiting room (I had my kindle) again nothing to eat, only allowed to drink water. 2 hours later you have another blood test and that’s it! I hope it goes well! 🤞🏻

Oh and I also bought a sandwich to eat after the final blood test as I was starving, so bring something to eat!x

Just had mine done on Monday - In my letter it said to fast 12 hours before the appointment

@Gabrielle I was told for mine to fast from 10pm the night before no water unless for medication or I was dehydrated and then only a small bit and this was the advice given to all other mums I know x
