Part time question for teachers

Hi I am currently off on maternity leave and I’m due back when my little girl is 9 months - end of February. I am dreading going back. I was just wondering when to speak to my school about part time. Does anyone have any advice? I would like to be a 0.9 teacher with one day off every two weeks? Does anyone have any experience with this?

I don’t personally do this but we have one teacher in my department (secondary English) which does and it works quite well. Just means that other teachers share those classes that she would have with her.

@Kristie thank you for this. I just need to know when I would have to ask the school. I am also not sure of the financial impact.

Following! I’m dreading even organising a meeting. Let alone going back 😭

@Char Use the teachers salary spreadsheet available on TES and you'll be able to see your take home. It factors in part time working, TLRs, pensions etc.

You need to give 12 weeks’ notice I believe. Google “flexible working request”.

@Rhiannon How long are you having off? I am not even sure how to ask for a meeting or when?

@Becky thank you so much! I will do this.

@Sophie I am due back in just under 18 weeks. Thank you for this.

I’m a teacher and I submitted a flexible working request to return 3 days a week which has been accepted. You should be able to request the paperwork from your school. I figured if it doesn’t work out to be sustainable financially I can always increase my hours but it would be difficult to decrease

@Char until April currently. But we have to have a new roof so I wouldn’t be surprised if I needed to go back earlier 🫠. I’m not sure either. I emailed the head about a separate thing and I didn’t get a response. There’s a new HR/business manager at the school since I’ve been off and I don’t know them!

@Char you would just be on 90% of what you are / were paid and will have to do 90% of tour directed time (meetings, inset days, etc). It would be best having the conversation with work sooner rather than later so they are more likely to say yes

@Kristie thank you so much, I have 18 weeks before going back, I think I’m going to mention this on my first KIT day back.
