Hey everyone! So would you let your 8 and 9 year old have a phone and game consoles if they can’t read at all nor know how to do math or any type of work they bring home? LoL and I wanna add the 9 year old is supposed to be in 4th grade but was held back… but they can rap any rap song, talk like they’re grown, and stay in trouble at school etc. What would you do?

My kids are homeschooled and have a flip phone. I hope this is your kid you're talking about and not someone else's.

@Lacey haha sounds like this discussion isn’t for you then. Move along pls no one asked if your kids attend a public school or gets homeschooled lol orrr the type of phone they use 😂

My 8yo son is in 3rd grade public school and doesn't own a phone yet. I was hoping to hold off until middle school. He's not responsible enough with stuff he already has.

Nope

My eight-year-old who is in third grade has a phone, but she knows how to read and do math and is very excellent at it.

My kid is 7. He excels in math and reading, and I still wouldn't give him a phone. Way too young, in my opinion.

Honestly no. But I will say my daughter learned how to read & write from using her phone. I turned on a setting option that allowed my daughter to hold the sentence or paragraph so it can read it out loud to her. By the time she started school she was able to read 1st & 2nd grade level books and write sentences.

No but not because they can’t read or do math but bet they are to young at this age. Most 8-9 year olds are not responsible enough to have a phone in my opinion.

Yes it’s different when you are using the phone for something important such as that. But they just have them for fun… games, YouTube, to call idk. Maybe I am old school because no way lol

In order for them to use those devices, they have to know how to read and spell and etc. It seems like they may not WANT to do the work in which they would not have those electronics. They are a privilege not a right and should be earned.

My son has learned a lot off of YouTube! He doesn’t have a phone but he has a tablet. You’d be surprised how much kids can learn from it, he sometimes teaches me things I didn’t know! He’s good at reading but he hates anything that involves writing. He’s more of a math kid. 8 or 9 in my opinion is still to young for a phone, so I agree on that.

The only reason my son got a phone last year is because he’s active in sports and is starting to stay home by himself for longer periods of time. I want him to be able to call and if he’s done with practice early. And I like knowing I can check up on him on the 360 app. The phone doesn’t go in his bedroom at night and doesn’t go to school. But if he can’t behave at school, or do his school work, a phone would be the last thing I would consider.
