Gestational diabetes - who is in the crew?

Have just been diagnosed with GD and feel super disappointed as I didn’t get it last time and my blood sugars have always tended to be low. But them’s the breaks. Anyone else in the GD crew and fancy keeping each other company?!

Me, diagnosed at 24 weeks and started insulin yesterday 😢

@Laura was it just not staying stable with diet only? I’m guessing insulin means a daily injection. Not fun! I haven’t had my session with diabetes team. I’m keen to get my monitor!

Me! Just found out today at 28 weeks (second pregnancy to have GD again) 😪

@Lou for now it’s just one injection at tea time. The threshold is so low for GD it’s frustrating! I’ve heard that it just gets progressively worse as the pregnancy goes on. But hopefully it doesn’t for you

@Monica ah not again! How did you find it last time? It’s the having to be very considered and plan what I eat as I like to just eat what I feel like especially since I’ve got a lot of nausea and vomiting.

@Laura let’s hope so but I’ll just take it as it comes. Hopefully I can control with diet but if I need meds then I’ll just have to adapt!

I think my experience was v diff to others. I was told my baby would be big, constantly being fear-mongered by the GD midwives. And at 38 weeks, I had PROM and gave birth to a tiny little boy weighing 5.10 lbs. I was shocked! I became so resistant towards the end to exercise, diet - I was on metformin 4 times a day, I couldn’t control my sugar levels - nothing worked. I took my diet too seriously bcos of it and I think that’s ultimately one of the reasons why my baby was of low birth weight. After labour, I my GD went immediately and my son was GD free too. This time, I plan to just focus on nourishing my body and not depriving it, even if my sugar levels are beyond control. That’s just my experience, everyone is different. Good luck on your journey ☺️

@Lou I have hyperemesis and only this week started to eat a bit better. Could only manage toast, crisps and coke so obviously terrible diet but nothing I could do about it. As long as you’re eating and drinking anything, it’s better than nothing, don’t put up with any crap from dieticians etc. as it’s hard enough feeling so sick without being “told off” for not eating well. Try not to worry about your diet, if you need meds/insulin then like you said you will adapt. Just to let you know though, metformin is known to cause nausea and vomiting, so I opted for insulin straight away

🙋🏻‍♀️ I was diagnosed at 17 weeks, 10 weeks earlier than the average expectant mother. So I've had to monitor 4 times a day and also take Metformin 3 times a day. It's not fun. I forgot to test a lot and also forget to take my Metformin alot. But the diabetes Dr is quite supportive. I spent alot of the first 6 weeks restricting myself because of the scared mongering from the nurses about how it's gonna affect my baby. But now I'm just focusing on nourishing myself for the baby's health, and if my glucose isn't managing, then so be it.
