Has anybody had to take their toddler to therapy? If so how did it go and did it help?

What type of therapy? Generally, if it’s mental/behavioral health related, I’ve found that for kids under 6, the focus is more so on therapy/coaching/resources for the parent as the first course of action. It seems as though getting an actual therapy appt with a child/adolescent provider for a toddler to be seen is difficult based on the shortage of providers and the severity of the issue. And virtual therapy for toddlers is not a great experience, but depending on the situation may be the only option.

@Hannah mental/behavioral. He witnessed he dad strangle me till I passed out back in may and I’ve been doing therapy and they recommended a great pediatric therapist for my son cause he was having visitations with his dad (court ordered) and I said screw it a month ago and stopped them but he’s been getting worse night terror and behavior wise tryna to attack his brother and I and punching or trying to choke me when he gets told no or doesn’t get his way. I just don’t know what else to do at this point

I am so, so sorry - I can’t even imagine how hard this has been for you alone, but also as a Mom and navigating the impact on your son 😞 given they recommended a therapist, I would absolutely try it - just getting a recommendation from another clinician is telling. Plus the therapist will work with you and give you action plans based on what they’re picking up and learning from sessions with your son, and you’ll feel better equipped/prepared for navigating situations that arise at home. Sometimes, people don’t have a great experience with child therapy because based on the situation, it wasn’t the best course of action or the therapist wasn’t a good fit. But given what you’ve shared…I think it would be hugely beneficial for you both.
