Dates in pregnancy

Does anyone know what dates do in pregnancy? I know you’re supposed to have around 6 a day from 36 weeks, but does anyone know what they are supposed to do? Can I start eating them now at 35 weeks?

Never heard of eating dates

@Kirstie oh! Haha it’s definitely something they recommend, a bit like raspberry leaf tea, I don’t think it has much evidence though xx

@georgia ohhh.. I'm not doing anything.... baby will come wen baby wants too. :) xx

It helps with softening the cervix. You can eat dates throughout your pregnancy and have no problems though so you don't need to wait.

Studies were done to show that eating 6 dates a day for 4 weeks helps to shorten the first stage of labour and reduces the risk of having/needing an induction as it also encourages spontaneous labour. I'm 35w5 and started having my 6 dates a day today as I'm aiming to deliver around 38-39w

@T ah thank you, yes I’d ideally like to be a week or two before my due date too ❤️

There is actually a small study backing this claim of eating dates helps with softening the cervix. You need to eat the 'juicy' type dates and approx 70-75g daily. Very sugary, tho. I do think dates helped me with my first delivery, and I have been eating them this time around, too 😊

It's meant to soften your cervix. I believe it helped with my 1st pregnant. Barely any pushing and no tear with a few puffs of gas an air. Hoping to have a similar birth this time 🙏
