Weaning

How has everyone found weaning if baby has a cows milk allergy? We have been told by the dietician we will get professional support on the best ways to wean, best meals etc when he is 6 months l, which is definitely going to be helpful for us. But I’m still dreading it. What kind of adaptations do you have to do?

here is what i got when my little one turned 6 months, might help you get some ideas but mostly it’s okay other than when buying shop bought purees etc just checking the ingredients for bold stuff like dairy, milk, wheat etc until you have trialed everything x

Honestly we found it beyond easy. We followed a vegan diet for our son but with meat added as we are meat eaters. If you're in the UK all shops have fantastic dairy free pouches and jars. With allergens we were told 3 on 3 off. So three days of giving the allergen 3 days without then if no reaction incorporate it into their diet permanently while introducing the next allergen

We found it easy too, we just gave him what we ate so we could be 100% sure of the contents. I actually introduced cows milk relatively early, small quantities and frequently, and he’s now fully on dairy at age 8 months. My doctor recommended that approach to build tolerance, as he was intolerant rather than allergic, but I don’t think it’s the textbook way of doing things…! But it’s worked well for us :) I started by adding dairy back into my diet when breastfeeding.

I found it really daunting at first especially when my eldest doesn’t have an allergy but you get used to it. I’ve noticed some ingredients on certain things we’ve brought before have changed so I’d always recommend to check even if it’s something you buy often. You get into the habit. Going to peoples houses weve always brought packed lunches or snacks but we bring extra now in case for him. We never really brought jars or the baby ready meals as he eats what we eat if no milk of course but I know there’s a few jars/pouches without milk etc. Going out for dinner worried me but luckily we’ve had great experiences and they’ve catered his allergy very easily. He’s 1 and still not passed stage 1 of milk ladder but he’s a great eater and eats all the good stuff that he can and has oat milk in the morning and before he goes bed. So like breakfast if my eldest wants weetabix, he will have cows milk but my youngest has oat milk in his but could use the formula too x

As others have said it’s actually pretty easy (thank you to all the vegans out there!). There are dairy alternatives to almost everything! We have the added challenge of egg allergy but to be honest it’s still not that bad. I have found it harder as breastfeeding and I miss chocolate and cake but little man doesn’t know anything about them and so makes life quite easy in that sense. We didn’t bother with purées or anything and just check ingredients of other stuff but it’s probably worse to think about than do!
