Croup!

My son has croup and we ended up in hospital and he had to have a dose of steroids. He's getting better I'm just so worried as he's really not eating much at all. Anyone have an meal ideas or ways to encourage him to eat more?

My daughters not long gotten over croup, ended up having an ambulance and first response out and steroids and she was exactly the same! She hardly ate, even afterwards it took her a while to eat, she wasn’t drinking a lot either but she’s obsessed with milkshakes and fruit shoots, which are usually a treat but we were very much if she’ll drink she can have as many as she wants. Same with food, whatever she wanted we let her have even if it was usually a treat. She had a lot of yogurts, fruits and smoothies as she really wasn’t feeling eating. We gave her a lot of her fav foods, like beans on toast, she loves the little dish microwave meals which are usually a last resort but she did eat that to get her appetite back! Hope your little man gets back to normal soon! Xx

Thank you, at least I know it's normal I was getting worried 😟 He's been obsessed with milkshakes too, so he's been having lots of them. I'll have to get some of those little dish meals. Xx

My LO has had croup each year since she was born so fully expecting it again this year! We know the signs so just go to A&E straight away and get the steroids. She would be the same and be off her food/milk when she was a baby but we would just offer different options and kept to her favourites. Luckily once the steroids kick in they usually improve quite quickly. Hope your LO feels better soon! Xx

@Rebecca we tend to let our daughter choose one or two and have them in the house just as back ups, but when she was ill we got a few and just let her choose one out the fridge. We found when she was ill, if we opened the fridge and let her have a look and choose something herself rather than us giving her something she’d eat it a lot better! Xx

Unfortunately our sons had croup 4 times in his 2 years. Twice he needed taking to hospital for steroids and he's now on preventer inhaler so I'm hoping and praying we make it through this winter without a hospital visit. Each time it's taken him a while to recover fully and we just offered food, milk and water little and often. Our son is extremely picky eater now and to try help he has his own snack draws. He knows he can have anything out of those when it's snack time. Maybe something like that will be helpful that he can access at all times. We have 4 draws, 1- fruit pouches (only way to get fruit into him), 2- veggie straws, 3- a selection of those oaty bars, fruit toddlers and apple wigglers and 4 is a selection of different biscuits, Gruffalo ones, chocolate chip cookies and party rings. It really helps when he knows he can go at snack time and pick it out himself. We also set up a shelving unit to have all his plates, cups, cutlery etc on for him to access and get himself to help with preparing meals.
