Weight gain

Since starting weaning last month, my 7 month baby’s weight has jumped from between the 50-75th percentile to the 91st… He has two meals a day, and around 32oz of milk… should I be cutting back his food or milk intake? He has a big appetite, and really enjoys both his food and milk. He is 75th percentile for height.

Have you been told the weight gain is a concern? If you cut back on anything at this age it would be food.

Babies normally have an intuitive feel for how much they need to eat so it’s usually not necessary to restrict their intake. You might find that within a month or two everything’s evened out as babies’ growth goes in fits and starts, and also once baby is crawling or walking around they tend to gain weight more slowly as they burn more calories. Personally I’d keep an eye on it a while and see. If they continue on a much higher centile than before it could be worth a chat with a health visitor or GP just to run through what you’re feeding him and whether they think it’s a good nutritional balance 😊

Thank you 🙏 No concerns. I spoke with my MIL who is a health visitor and she recommended cutting back a bit on milk, but I always thought that it was food which should be reduced at this age, not milk?

Thanks Sophie! He’s not crawling yet, so you’re right, once he’s moving around a bit, it will hopefully all balance out. Will keep an eye on it.

Nah he’s fine just wait and see what happens when he’s moving about 🤗. Think about it if we were just sat on are bottoms or lay on our backs then started eating two extra meals we would be getting plump 🤷🏼‍♀️😂 I am glad he’s enjoying his food!x

I wouldn’t cut back on milk. Milk is supposed to be their main supplement for babies first year. Technically they are supposed to be able to survive off just the milk the first year and food is just for fun is what my pediatrician told us. I would double check with your pediatrician but that’s what I have read and been told!

My son put on a ton of weight when he started on food, he eats a ton and still loved his milk as well back then as well. Once he started crawling he stopped putting anything on, and now he's walking and running about he's slimmed out a lot and started growing upwards instead of outwards😂 if no ones concerned then I wouldn't be worried yourself😊
