Accident !!

So my son and I was in the kitchen and I was making a cup of tea, I’ve gone to get the milk out the fridge and my son has pulled the cup of hot water from the kitchen side onto himself- it was horrible and very distressing I did all the obvious first aid needed and called 999.. when I attended the hospital the paramedic dropped me off and left she then came back in to tell me she is reporting me to social services !! I was really upset and felt very guilty already so after this I was even more upset the nurses had to comfort me- I am now super stressed and don’t know what to expect to happen can anyone give any advice please! I’m am so worried - Any hate comments will be removed I’m not here to mum shamed I love my child and it was an ACCIDENT that happened within seconds !!

You said it yourself it was an ACCIDENT we are all human and accidents happen if and when social services contact you they will likely to an assessment on the situation and ask you how you would avoid it in future. Yes it is very scary I'm 37 weeks pregnant and had to have an assessment done by social services because of a mental health incident from before I fell pregnant! It is scary as hell but social services are pretty good they aren't as scary as they seem. There's no risk here just an innocent mistake which I doubt you will ever make again due to pure anxiety around the situation and experience you have had. Just be co-operative don't come across hostile and explain the situation clear as day there shouldn't be any problems at all!x

@Jorja Thankyou I hope it’s like this ! Xx

Honestly I can't see there being a problem, they are very open minded and with situations like this it is an honest mistake. I wouldn't worry to much about it just wait for them to contact you, it may be a policy for the ambulance crew to have to report these things just in case of repetitive behaviours with certain families xx

Hey hun x honestly i’ve had social workers my whole pregnancy and for a good few years now but again like yu said it was a accident you have a toddler whose exploring different things it’s all part of the learning process so just explain to them what happened. they can’t rule it as anything except an accident because when yu saw yu took the necessary actions and done what needed to be done. Having your child in the kitchen with yu shows that yur a good mother in its self yur bonding with yur child throughout the day. don’t stress it as all even tho it’s easier said then done. and make sure yur point of view is heard clearly because some social workers like phrasing things in their own way. Good luck x

@Samíe Thankyou for your comment I really just feel awful x

Also he followed me to the kitchen he’s attached to me half the time and plus I was at my grandad house and he’s been very awkward there recently so he wouldn’t stay in the living room with my grandad 💔x

It was an accident don’t worry it may be standard procedure 💕

@Jade it’s not, they only report if they feel they need to , the nurses at the hospital who was comforting me told me the paramedic was out of order for doing it x

It was an accident. No one can love your child more than you do. I hope he gets better and everything goes well with the social services

My son suffered a burn through completely accidental circumstances too. Although I wasn’t told outright social was called I did suspect it because of the guilt. But hospitals see everyone and they know accidents from intentional harm. I did have social services call me and they just wanted to chat and told me a few things for safety with a child then because I had no other warning signs and the hospital had been contacted and my count of events made sense with an accident it was dropped and no further action is needed.

I think it's standard for them to look into anything like this. They're just double checking it was an accident for safeguarding procedures. It might be super stressful for people like yourself who had a horrendous accident which you already feel guilty for but that's unfortunately necessary to enable them to help those few children that are injured through adults intentionally choosing to inflict suffering on them. Like others have said, just be open and honest about what happened and hopefully it'll all be over with nice and quickly and you can try to move on. On a side note, I get you feeling guilty but try to cut yourself some slack. It was a freak accident. It wasn't something you intentionally did. You're human x

They have a duty of care to report incidents like this to SS, so don't take it personally. Its their job I'm afraid, but I'm sure all will be fine. I knocked a hot drink over myself when I was a little kid, I remember my parents whipping my clothes off me super fast and putting cold water on me!

@Rebecca they don’t have a duty of care to do it the paramedic decided she was going to herself the nurses told me they don’t have to and it isn’t protocol they only do it when they feel it’s necessary so the paramedic decided I’m abusing or neglecting my child which definitely isn’t the case it happened within 3 seconds honest to god!💔😭

@Georgia how long after did they call? Xx

When they ring just explain what happened and measures you will put in place to stop a repeat incident, such as a stair gate on the kitchen door or making sure the cup is pushed all the way back on the side etc. if it’s a one time thing they will probably just give you advice and offer extra help if needed x

It happened to us too. My partner dropped his coffee on our toddler when pushing the pram outside and luckily some ladies from a pharmacy nearby saw him and provided first aids and rang the ambulance and took us to hospital. A few days later I received a phone call from social services to tell me that the incident was reported to them by 999 and that they closed the case because they understood it was an accident and also because the appropriate steps were taken for his treatment (I.e. ringing 999 and taking him to hospital). He didn’t talk about any safety measures or anything and he was very kind and said that these accidents could happen to anyone. I didn’t even know the social services were contacted but I understand is a protocol for 999 to report any incidents like that and it’s the social services job to decide whether further investigation is needed or not. Accidents happen to anyone and you acted promptly in seeking treatment for your son, so don’t worry about it.

Just saw this it wasn’t long at all I think it might have been the week after. But it seriously isn’t anything to worry about like Kirsten said you just gotta let them know that you know it was a mistake and how to prevent it in future
