Introducing formula

My little one is 6 months old now and EBF since birth. Had expressed milk as top up feeds in a bottle pre 10 weeks old as he had slow weight gain, so took a bottle well and hopefully would again. Thinking of introducing a bottle at bedtime (but still breastfeeding during the night) so my husband can help with the bedtime routine more and hopefully help to break the sleep association little one has to feeding (it’s got really bad and currently needing to co-sleep so I can get any sleep) My question is, how much formula should we give in a bottle at bedtime? Obviously I don’t know how much he’s usually taking in at that feed. My hope is that it will fill him up a bit and help with longer stints. Another reason for introducing formula is so that I have something to mix in with food, like baby porridge etc. as I don’t get much when pumping.

I'm aiming to do the same. Baby could potentially end up taking 8oz at bed which is 250ml so that's the max id ever make but we just started yesterday and I made half that as a test to see if she would even take it and she took 20ml only. Will try again tomorrow. Good luck!!!

We started with a bottle at bedtime 5oz works nicely we've been doing this a few months and only recently increased to 6oz in general breastfed babies are used to little and often feeds not large amounts any more makes him really sick. Also one they but 6 months you can use full fat cows milk in food just not as a main drink so don't worry if you aren't pumping enough

@Vicky yeah that’s helpful thanks. Will try to ease him onto it slowly

@Flo yeah definitely don’t want to give him too much and make him sick! Will ease him onto it. Little one has CMPA so can’t have dairy until 1, so we’re having to try alternative milks. Once we know he’s okay with them then we will use them with food but because of allergies and eczema we’re easing into weaning too

We started a few days ago same routine, and made a bottle as per formula instructions (210 ml of water, ended up about 230 ml/8 oz?) and he smashed the whole lot 😅 but I have him on 4 feeds a day for a while now, so I know he can drink a lot in one go even on a breast. Yesterday he was fussy so I gave him a Little “snack” on the breast about 1.5h before bedtime. He still smashed 180ml of formula before bed. Spoiler alert - it didn’t help with night wakings 😅 in fact the past few nights were one of the worst and I co-slept for second half of the night. But it coincided with him teething, and I didn’t need to offer him a breast till 6h after the bottle, so I think it helped in eliminating night feeds So I personally wouldn’t restrict how much you offer them. Make a full 8oz bottle and see how much he wants. Babies know best how much they can take. Same as with a breast they will stop when full
