Not feeding

Hi, does anyone else’s baby refuse to eat? LO is 16 weeks and barely makes 700ml a day on Nutramigen Puramina. He often refuses the bottle, turning his head crying but other times absolutely tanks 180. The GP won’t try him on any other formula and we have been referred to the paediatric dietician but the appointment isn’t until January 😩 Any advice on how to cope in the meantime greatly appreciated!

All babies thrive off different amounts if milk so aslong as his gaining weight I wouldn't worry to much My girl is 10 months now and never exceeded 5oz per bottle

@Emma-louise he isn’t really gaining! On the 2nd percentile! How many times is she feeding? Do you find ‘little and often’ works better?

My baby went through a phase like this around the same age it really stressed me out I even took her to out of hours as I was worrying about her getting dehydrated and it was in the summer! Anyway they said she was fine not to worry as long as she’s drinking throughout the day and if it’s an issue with them not liking the taste to add more water than normal! She eventually started drinking more but not as much as previously but has carried on gaining weight I wouldn’t worry too much as long as he’s drinking fairy regularly and is gaining weight x

Have you tried adding natural vanilla extract

@Laura ooh no! Is there a brand you recommend? How much do I add?

I tried the vanilla extract it didn’t do anything for my baby but hopefully helps with yours, any is ok as long as there’s no alcohol in it x

My little girl has been on Nutramigen LGG 1 since she was 5 weeks old, currently 6 months. We’ve had no end of difficulty getting her to drink it and even more difficulty getting anyone to listen to us. She’s dropped 2 weight centiles and has had static and very slow weight gain. Currently 600-700ml a day is her happy place but we had times where she would only take around 450ml. I’ve had countless days where I’ve been on the verge of a breakdown and cried constantly when trying to feed her which has also been awful for her so I can completely empathise. Is she settled on the 700ml she’s having, still having wet and dirty nappies and showing her usual behaviour (not lethargic etc)? Xx

@Jade this is exactly our experience too. He also really suffers with reflux, which has landed us in hospital as he was having funny episodes where he would twist and writhe in pain, so feeding has been near impossible. He’s fine in himself, although seems much happier when fed, but is distressed when the bottle even approaches his mouth! Yes his nappies are all fine and he’s the opposite of lethargic - only really naps in the car/ on a walk. Definitely feel you on getting someone to take you seriously - it’s so exhausting x

@Jade is she gaining weight on 6-700?

@Megan-Louise has she always been on 2nd centile? When she was a baby I'd have to dream feed her alot because she jusy wasn't interested in milk so then weaned her at 17 weeks She was born under 0.4th centile and now at 10 months I'd just coming up to 25th centile She's still not a big milk drinker and its a struggle to get her to have 10oz of milk a day

@Emma-louise no he was on 25th percentile! How did you find weaning at 17 weeks? Does she feed ok on solids?

@Megan-Louise so we started on purees just veggies to start and then did fruit ones too After this I did porridge for her and made it super smooth She seems to really love her food especially snacks 🙈 Just have to hold out on blw until 6 months and the only top allergen we did was Oats in porridge She did end up with other allergies across the way but I left them out for a few weeks snd tried again just to be sure Also keeping a food diary is great as you can then work out any reactions from that If baby has reflux its a great help too but jusy be careful of the acidic fruits as they can make it worse

@Megan-Louise we’ve also got silent reflux and we’re on omeprazole for that, it’s taken us 3 months to get the dose right for her and it was only after being in hospital and finally seeing a consultant who listened to me that we had it increased enough that it’s made a difference. She still won’t take more than the 600-700ml but the difference is she happily takes that now rather than us either fighting with her or feeding her when she was asleep. Our little one has always been the same though, so active and happy, hitting all of her milestones and generally only being unhappy for feeds, she would also scream at the sight of a bottle, bib or muslin! Weight wise she initially dropped 2 centiles, then was just maintaining enough to keep her on her current one but she did go through a 6 week period where she gained and lost the same 100g. She’s only fined 500g total since the middle of august x
