Finger foods

My lo is 6.5 months and doing really well with solids. She's generally accepting mashed textures. I made her pancakes this morning. That were about 2-3 inches in size. She stared eating them but she was struggling to chew them, gagging and bringing forward/spitting out larger chunks. She has no teeth. It worried me to see her gagging so in the end I mashed them up with yoghurt and we used a spoon. Anyone got any advice for finger foods? She does well with broccoli but otherwise seems to bite off too much. Should we not expect her to be able to handle these foods until she has teeth?

Gagging is really good! It's hard to watch but gagging is what protects them from choking as it's forcing the food back forward in their mouth. Teeth are irrelevant when it comes to food as their gums are rock hard as their baby teeth are right behind waiting to come out. It's a new experience for her so the more you allow her to practice the better she will get at eating solids. It's why so many families do a mix as you know they'll ingest with a puree but explore how to eat with a solid.

Thanks Chrissy for the reassurance. So difficult to balance finding her ability vs. what would be pushing her too much 🙈
