Claiming back Annual leave

I'm just wondering if anybody has successfully claimed back annual leave? So I'm currently on Annual leave this week but have been struck with a stomach bug the last 2 days. It's day 3 and I'm finally starting to feel better, but obviously I've lost 3 days of time off and had to cancel plans. I've heard you can claim Annual leave back if sick and have it classed as sick days. Has anybody done this and how do you typically go about this? I'm very rarely sick so have never had to do this before. Thanks in advance for any help/advice

Just contact your employer and ask to switch the day ls from a/l to sick leave

As previous said, just let your employer know and they’ll change it to sick. I had covid while I was on annual leave, and got my annual leave back.

Some employers will require you to contact them to report sick as you would if you were due in work. Take a look at your policy or give them a call to ask

As Emma said, where I work you wouldn’t get it back because you didn’t notify workplace that you are sick (unless you did, but it’s not mentioned in the post).

I haven't notified them for the past 2 days, but will contact them today. Fingers crossed they will backdate it to Wednesday or I guess worse case scenario is I will atleast get today back if I speak to them today. Thank you all

You might need a GP note

It’ll completely depend on your manager, mine has been happy to cancel my annual leave and change it to sick leave when this has happened to me

I have. It was offered though when I went back. They just changed my absence on the system from leave to sickness

@Bethan did you inform them on your days off that you were unwell or just when you returned?

From what I remember I think I'd gone off sick just before my leave started and I hadn't recovered so I said on the phone I had leave booked now so would be back after the leave I had booked. When I got back my manager was like "would you have been back in work if you hadn't had your leave" and I said very unlikely and he offered to change it so I had my leave back. I think how accommodating you are depends on management!
