Baby not interested in food

We have been trying to give our 7 month old purées and mashed foods since he was about 5.5 months and he’s just not interested. I always have to force some in for him just to try it and then doesn’t want any. I read that at this age he should have about 8-12 Tbsp per day of solids and I can barely get him to have 2 Tbsp even though I try throughout the day. Should I be worried or will he eventually go for it when he’s ready? Also, I’m so nervous to give him pieces of real food like in baby led weaning. How do you get over the fear of them choking?

My baby was the same at first but in the last 3 weeks he's absolutely demolishing his food. He's on 3 meals a day now and clears the lot. Looking back I think he was teething and not interested in the food. I would just keep offering like you are doing but don't force it or he will get negative associations with eating. It will come eventually. I am doing both weaning methods and usually a BLW meal at lunch. The choking fear gets easier as they become more confident. You can start with things that are soft like broccoli and fruits/vegetables, omelette, less likely to choke and will build your confidence xx

I would let him self feed. It sounds like he’s just resisting you feeding him which a lot of babies do! They are no more likely to choke on solid food prepared safely for their age than they are on puree. The Solid Starts app has guides for every food on how to safely serve things to them. Feeding themselves also decreases choking risk. you can look up videos on gagging vs choking to help you be able to tell the difference. Gagging will happen but it’s a protective mechanism and not a bad thing. You can also take an infant cpr class near you.

Try baby led weaning! Mine like purées at the start but then she just really wanted to do it herself so me giving her purées just put her off food. I honestly think I slowed her down 😂 With choking I would take a first aid class for your own peace of mind and make your partner attend. But try things like over cooked potato, carrots so you can mush them between your fingers. That’s how strong their tongues are so they will squish against gums and pallet if they don’t have teeth. Let me tell you though they’re really good at not choking 😂 it sounds stupid but the noises they make are scary right like I’ve jumped up many times but then just given her a second and she gags and makes crazy noises then gets the food either spat out or swallowed. They really are good at it so don’t worry too much. You won’t know till you try so me saying this might go over your head, once you see your baby doing it you’ll be filled with pride and confidence xxxx

Also forgot to say don’t worry about the amount either. Mine is 10-11 months old almost and I was so worried at 7 months because I kept thinking why is she not eating as much. We gave her 3-4 teaspoons on a good day 😂 now she’s chomping down but still has meals where she eats really little so it comes with time. Just let your baby take their time, food is still so new there’s so many sensations and textures for them to process xxx

Great advice on this thread. Babies develop at their own pace. Some babies aren’t interested in food until they’re a year old. Keep offering.

Try baby lead weaning hun. My daughter so much happier to feed herself, do t get me wrong it’s really messy but she eats more when I let her explore. I do t know how much she actually eats, but paediatrician said not to stress for till 12 months is just for fun x

don’t force it. he will eat when he is ready! does he touch and play with the food or are you just serving it to him? letting him play and explore might help his interest. as far as BLW and choking, you just can’t stress about it. my daughter went straight to BLW at 7 months and never choked. they will gag but that’s totally healthy and normal. check out the solid starts app, it’s very very helpful for BLW
