Picky eater

Is anyone else’s toddler extremely picky? I’m actually starting to get worried because he refuses to eat most things I cook but then cries asking for “cake”. Breakfast isn’t too bad most days as he likes toast, yoghurt and cereals etc but dinner seems to not be happening 😖 Not sure what to do anymore. I even resorted to cooking pasta meals frequently as he likes pasta but even that is hit n miss. At what point do you contact health visitors? What would they do any different? Has anyone been in similar situation and can advise. Thanks x

What they don’t know they won’t miss out on. Should have never given him cake ….

If you give him a lot of sugar , such a fruit juices or none organic yogurt just stop, he’s craving sugar which is like crack cocain for kids

My toddler is fussy (I think the response you have received below is pretty harsh) although it is true that children do prefer sweet food generally, it has also been scientifically proven it is down to mostly genetics. I was a really fussy child and so was my Dad. We weren't fed sugar so I do believe it is down to genetics. What I am doing is offering savoury snacks and if my boy refuses and asks for something sweet I say no and distract him with a game or something else. Once they think you'll give in and give them say a biscuit etc they will continually refuse food. But also I haven't given my son anything sugar based for a while now and he is still fussy. Won't eat any type of bread, or homemade snacks I make for him. He won't eat fruit and I have to hide all veggies. He has been like this since 18 months old even before he had the odd piece of chocolate as a treat. As long as your little one is not losing weight, the health visitor won't have any major concerns. Some local areas offer fussy eating courses

So my little boy has his moments with fussiness. He seems to eat best when he's actually sitting at the dinner table with us and watching everyone else eat the same meal as him. I refuse to give any treat things as snacks (my dentist recommended this too) but only as a dessert for a meal. My little boy loves fruit (not all so I've found the ones he does and make sure I always have them in) and I always offer this as snacks and with meals throughout the day. Another massive game changer for me was the sauce for his pasta. We basically use blended veggies. He doesn't know he's getting all the goodness but he loves it. My LB is also fussy if I just mention peas, says he doesn't like them but blended peas known as 'green sauce' for his pasta and he gobbles the whole thing 🤣 If you don't have time to make the sauces, the packets from.the baby aisle in the supermarket work wonders. I've used the carrot, pea, broccoli etc. If he likes chicken or ham, maybe add that in and some cheese on top too, voila 👍
